My first F30 problem.

Ok so just out of the blue cruising on the highway the other day the car now has a slight humming noise like a wheel bearing as soon as you go over 100km/h. Its on its loudest at about from 120km/h. You can only hear it clearly on smooth tar roads. I have tried to figure out what side by changing lanes sharply at 120 but it stays the same. I have even switched to neutral but it stays the same.

I can only rule these options
1 wheel bearing
2 gearbox
3 diff
Any other F30 drivers experience a similar problem

There's a good chance your wheel balancing may be out

But then again with these new BMW's it could be anything

What mileage are you currently on ?

My runflats make humming noises, but nothing that I can tell from the drivetrain itself?

i think that is the cause

No vibration on steering. I got 13000km on clock. The sound comes from the front. It sounds to me it might be left wheel. But then again it could be from the centre. At this stage its difficult to say. Ill visit the dealer on monday.

This is also an possibility. At what speed does the noise start

Also at hiway speeds, driving in town I hear nothing but as soon as you hit the open roads at 120ish speeds I do hear it.. Could be wheel alignment or balancing, my stock goodyears were terrible tyres.. got continentals on the front now and it is better.. Have BMW do the alignment and check the suspension to be sure

Yes yes in town nothing. Any speed below 100km/h no noise. But at 120km/h you can hear it nicely. It never did this before. It is nearly as if you are driving on a corse type tar road and you feel it.

Lately I have realised that the new RFTs do make more noise than what I was used to, by comparison our F20 also on RFTs makes no noise at att (16") and the F30 on 18"s make noise.. so I really can't say but I suspect incorrect alignment could have caused improper tyre wear which is humming more than usual now? I do however feel no vibrations or anything and the car sticks through the corners:thumbs: so I ignore the RFT noise!

its your differencial, im sure, i have the same problem on my ride. perhaps it could also be that the break shoe is really close, forcing the pads to slightly make contact with the disc.
but im sure its the diff, that explains the sound gettin louder with higher speeds???

nice

I have the same problem with my brand new F30.

It has a humming noise around 100km/h. I ignored it assuming it will go away after it completes the break-in period.

Is it serious?

Dude, assuming you have something called motorplan.
Take it in and have it checked.

Whats the point of waiting for something to fail?

Where you from. Let the mechanic go drive it. Apparently there have been a few cases of wheel bearings (bad batch) as low as a 1000km. Also to note is that it is very dificult to isolate what side with these cars

I have the exact same problem with my F30 - It's one year old with 20000 kms but I only have it four weeks.

It's a really annoying humming/oscillating noise when I go over 100kph.

I've been to the dealer and they said it was a known issue and did some work but failed to correct it. They are taking it off me for a few days to try to diagnose the issue.

I'm really curious to to how they fixed your issue. They have ruled out bearings and tires so far.

sadly clearly something's up.
Initially I thought it was the tyres I got on (upgraded to 19's after market wheels and tyres)

I'm gonna make some noise at the dealership (after putting the 18's back on)

Heh, I also get a hum/buzz over 100kph... it's not particularly loud so I only really notice it when my music is really soft. Driving ability remains unaffected. I've found it really hard to isolate as it seems dependent on the road surface. I.e. I can hear it on N1 but not N14. That might just be because the N14 has a shitty surface and I can't hear anything over the road-noise.

18" here.

Noise came back and they investigated it. Its tyres so they say and apparently confirmed it when the dealer rep came. They took a brand new set of wheels of a new car and fitted them and then took it on the same road and the noise was gone.

its very strange these tyres for even wind direction influence the volume of the noise. A head on wind its at its loudest and from the right. Wind from the rear and left its softer noise. Its probably how the sound travels.

Car got 25 000km on now
