What disks and pads to get?

Hey guys. Need to replace discs and pads on my E46 330i. Goldwagon quoted me around R1900 for Febi disks and pads all round with sensors. Midas around R1500 for ATE. Was told to stay away from ATE though as they are noisy and generate a lot of brake dust, experienced this with my jetta. Still need to get a quote from the agents. What is the OEM brand that the agents use? Any other recommendations? Thinking of going with the bilsteins unless there's a reason not to...

Agents just quoted R6600 excl. vat and labour!!!

Yepp ATE is the OEM brake system for BMW.

I fitted ATE brake pads and disc's on Saturday and i have no noise.

Real OEM won’t tell you the maker of parts and neither will BMW.

Check the logo on your brake reservoir cap it should say ATE. My E90 has an ATE logo on the cap.

The bmw brake calipers are also made by ATE.

Do spares shops like Midas and Auto Zone get commission from the sales of supplier products?

BMW uses ATE pads, calipers and discs on the majority of their 3 series models.
But why don't you buy the BMW Performance discs for your 330i?

Perhaps saying that in order to promote a product that they sell instead?

This is the first time I have heard something bad about ATE discs or pads.

ATE pads are definitely not noisy, unless you use them with the BMW Performance discs. You here a funny vibration noise due to the drilled discs. They do tend to make a bit of brake dust though.

Where can I get the performance disks from? Stealer prices are ridiculous for the standard disks as it is:fencelook:

replaced my Discs and pads on the front of my E46 330i last wednesday, used ATE discs and pads, the discs were R395 each and the pads were R510 for both sides, sensor was R109 and only took one on the left side, no issues/complaints/extra dust to note... just good BMW brakes...

btw, both the calipers have ATE stamped on the insides...so def OEM..

ATE disks and pads (OEM in the first place)!!

My father in law fitted Febi disks to his 328i and was not long before they started to shudder, so he is not impressed. Brake dust is one of those things, and I'd rather have brake dust than warped disks that shudder from getting too hot (ceramic pads do this in particular).

Midas charged me R2700 for disks, pads and wear sensors for front and read for my Wife's 320i - agents wanted R3200 with labour just for the rear! The 330i brakes are of course going to be more expensive, but rather go for the better quality parts since they do last generally quite well on these cars!

I find it hard to believe that any place will sell ATE discs and pads for cheaper than the Febi equivalent. Febi makes good value for money brakes (as with all the other replacement parts they make) where as ATE make good brakes.

Buuuuut don't discount febi brakes to quickly as I have driven a 540i with febi pads around a track (more than 5 laps), and I had absolutely zero fade (and the discs where also nothing fancy replacement parts)

Thanks guys:thumbs: I have the quote from Midas in the car. Will verify it tonight. I know they quoted me for ATE front and rear pads and front disks. The rear disks would have to be ordered but the quote for those 3 came to under R1100. Rear disk can't be more than R500/R600...
