BMW 320i PLASTIC KEY

Hi,

When I bought my car, they didn't give me spare keys. They only gave me one original key and another plastic thing. I am not sure if its a key holder :fishwack: or if its a spare key. I was reading on other forums and they where saying its an emergency key for opening the door.

I attached the picture of both keys

Did you check if there's a key in the plastic holder? If not..you'll have to go to the stealer to get a quote for a new/spare key...Not sure if there are independent dealers that can programme a new/spare key for you..Hope this helps.

Yes, there is a plastic key inside the holder. So does this mean, its a spare key

It's plastic!? :uhoh:

Did you try inserting the whole thing in your car and trying to start it with the button?

Don't think that plastic key would work to open the doors??

The BMW roundel is missing in the middle of the key too.

May be your service key, when you give the car in for a service.

+ 1 - it is your service key, it will only open doors - wont start the engine and wont open the kubby either.

Mine starts the engine :fencelook:

So you saying it acts just like a normal key. In other words its a spare key??

No, thats not what he's saying!
It's a service key which will NOT open cabby nor boot and not meant to be used on a daily basis as its plastic and will wear!

This is what it is for.

The small key you keep on you, normally in your wallet. The plastic holder is kept in the cubby hole.

If you are out and you lose your key. Then you use the plastic key to open the car. Then you insert it into the plastic holder and then you start the car and drive off.

Is a back up to not leave you stranded as such.

Cheers

interesting - did you have your original key with you in the car?

the platic key wont be for daily use as posted by promtec - my friend uses his plastic key when he goes out surfing - he leaves the original key in the car and keeps the plastic key in his wetsuit.

I was wondering what the use was...

I recieved 2 x standard keys AND the plastic one.

So when you say for instance take your car to the car wash, lock all your stuff in the cabby and give them the platic key. So now they can move the car around without being able to steal your thangs!!

Cool...

guys, plastic key is the wet key as well, can keep it if you go to the beach or whatever and use it to open the car.

Exactly that! And the scary thing, it was only after reading the 'book of words' that I discovered the purpose of this - in the meantime the plastic key and holder were conveniently sitting in the cubbyhole, just imagine if someone broke into the car knowing about this and took a chance!

It's important to alternate the proper key fobs so that they get chance to charge etc, but my secondary key is also missing the roundel, which is annoying...

Just to repeat what has been said already!!

When combined these are a completely functioning (non-remote) key. As said, keep the small key on you and the other in the cubby.

The small key is intended to be kept in your wallet for emergencies. If locked out, open car with that key and then insert it in its holder, start up and move off!!

Easy peasy!!

And for those that want a sold called service key....

You remove your original metal key from the remote, lock the boot from the cubby switch and then lock the cubby with the key. You give them just the remote which can do the rest but open the cubby or boot. The boot will have a dead lock and won't open or close with the rest of the central locking.

Thanks ABMI, was wondering how "Service Key" could be achieved... The older beemer had an ugly grey key for that purpose.
