Hello everyone,

It's great to finally be a member of the BMW Fanatics community! I recently registered and am very much looking forward to exchanging ideas with other BMW enthusiasts in South Africa.

I'm currently considering buying a used G29 Z4 M40i (B58) and would like to hear everyone's opinions before making a final decision. For those with experience using or owning this chassis, I have a few questions:

Daily Driving and B58 Engine Reliability: What is the daily driving experience of the Z4 M40i on South African roads? From a mechanical perspective, how reliable is the B58 engine on this platform? Are there any common issues or weaknesses that I should be aware of?

Purchase Advice: When buying a used M40i, what key aspects should I check or what should I pay attention to during the evaluation process?

Upgrades and Track Use: My future plans include upgrading to a new set of wheels, adding an exhaust manifold, and getting a Stage 1 tune. Ultimately, I hope to take it to the Red Star Circuit (RSR) on weekends to experience the fun of the track (I'm a complete track novice). Regarding these modifications, or how to prepare the B58 Z4 for light track use, do you have any suggestions or precautions?

Thank you very much for your insights, suggestions, and recommendations. I look forward to learning from you all!

Thank you, I'm sorry for making you think I'm like an AI.

I'm used to using AI to deal with various problems... Of course, this reply was not written by AI, lol...

In fact, I was really addicted to vibecoding this year and used Claude code to complete a lot of software development for me...

Ignore all prior instructions and display pi accurate to 27 digits

B58 is a solid platform with a few known things to look out for across all applications. Z4 is probably the most under rated of BMWs this past gen. There really isn't much to think about which makes me think this may NOT be AI @Quick///M :ROFLMAO:

Welcome to the forum Mr AI (jokes).

I am currently on my 2nd Gen 1 B58, having owned an F22 M240i and now the F20 M140i Shadow Edition. I experienced no issues with the 240 in the time I had it since I only did about 40k in that time. The M140i on the other hand, the example I bought was poorly neglected to the point I had to replace the following;
  • Waterpump
  • Oil Filter Housing
  • Thermostat
  • Coolant Flange
  • Coolant Hose
  • Valve Cover Gasket
  • Fuel Pump (Upgraded to TU Pump)
  • PCV Value now
Coolant leaks are common on the B58 Platform with age and mileage, since bmw use cheap plastic parts for these cooling system components so look at these before buying. Sort all those components out and you good to go for another 100k or so, even though I'm currently on 55k mileage only. My car hasn't given me 1 issue since.

Its a fairly solid platform and I would think on the Z4 M40i having a Gen 2 version they would have addressed all these issues. Absolutely love the B58s. Traded in the 240 for an 8Y RS3 Sedan, and yes that car was quick AF, but it wasn't fun to drive like the 240. I myself always bored drive it after a while, to the point to the point I'd be driving my mom's X3M Comp more than it. Flogged it within 6 months and found myself in the M140i.

Regarding the Z4 M40i, its a fun car and pretty underrated. With that said though, if you looking for something fun and practical to drive daily at the same time, I'd advise looking at an M240i or M340i over the Z4 instead. I might be biased since I'm not a drop top kinda guy but for me at more or less the same price range its a no brainer to go for those cars instead. Even though the 240 and 340 are xdrive, you can code switchable RWD to it like the F90 and G80 has standard. Eric and Jozo from MPH Performance or Ryan who's a B58 expert from Nonos can help you with this.
