discussion Downpipe for M2 G87

Good morning
I’m still new to this forum thing so I apologise if I’ve posted this in the wrong forum.

I just wanted some advice and some direction from those who’s had some experience with downpiping a car which is still under motorplan and warranty.

I bought a M2 (G87) a couple of months back and i was thinking about getting a downpipe. However when I asked the bmw dealership (kempton park) they said that it would void my entire motorplan and warranty if I installed a downpipe which sound a bit extreme.

So I just wanted to find out from people who has installed an aftermarket exhaust on their cars as to how do they navigate through such a situation? And is their any dealerships in the Gauteng area which are a little bit more aftermarket friendly?

Long as you understand that you are willing to risk your motorplan for the downpipe.... No dealership will safeguard if your car gets flagged or randomly audited during a service.

If the car is still under motorplan, I would suggest getting an M performance system to keep your motorplan intact, if you are still really after a downpipe, TMSS quality and workmanship is exceptional, but it does come at a cost.

(PS any non oem part can void your motorplan, it really depends how @nal the dealership is but I know of a guy who had his motorplan flagged for just running spacers )

Downpipe will void your warranty. IIRC the newer cars even detect that a downpipe is installed and flag it even if your car is not throwing an engine light. The actual values from the O2 sensors, EGT, EGP etc are used to do this. Even if your particular car doesn't do this, if anything breaks and you refit your originals, BMW even resorts to having the bolts on the downpipe checked to see if they were ever removed and refitted or not. People have had this happen.

This is now the norm with virtually every major manufacturer. As @NBN says, guys have even had issues running spacers and non-star-rated tyres, where they claim it has affected the transfer case or suspension.

The friendly dealer thing doesn't work anymore and you also have no guarantee you will be close to this friendly dealer wherever you have an issue. You also don't have any guarantee your dodgy friend inside will still be employed there. Also don't forget when the car is plugged in, you are effectively having it scanned by the mothership in Germany these days.

M Performance or Akrapovic exhausts are approved.

Honestly, if an M2 isn't powerful or responsive enough I don't know what is. If you have unlimited money then I guess losing plan is fine, if you're even remotely cared about money, then doing this is absurdly retarded. If I had 2 M2s that I *KNEW* were in the same condition just one had plan and one didn't I'd mark the delta at least 250k between them. Add in that if you lost plan my instant assumption is that you've done something retarded, make it more like 400k.

As mentioned, as long as you acknowledge it's at your own risk and that you could potentially have your motorplan suspended, it's all up to you.

These days, BMW can measure the distance between the O2 sensors within the CAT, and if you install an aftermarket downpipe, obviously, these distances don't align with OEM standards. IMHO, not worth it. Enjoy your G87 for what it is.

After all, it's a 49-second car on the Driven+ track
