discussion All terrain tyres

Hi Guys,

For those of you who may have tried all terrains on an Xdrive X3(G01)
I'm considering swopping my Pirellis(P7) out for some all terrains as we are planning a lot more light dirt road trips in the future and the runflats are awful on anything other than normal roads. I've had non run-flats on my previous X3 and the ride was considerably better but this time I'm thinking of something slightly more offroad focussed.(Planning on a roofrack with some spot lights too)

I have style 691 19" rims at the moment and wonder if there are any recommendations for tyres that would fit these? From what I can gather there are no exact size matches to my current tyres(245/50/r19) in all terrain form. I'm a bit confused on options. What kind of tolerance do I have for width and ratio on these without affecting steering/xdrive? Would it be better to go for other rims aswell?

My Pirellis are still in really good shape so I would likely keep them at this point and perhaps do swops for holidays.

Thanks!

Easier to probably get 18" rims and then ATs for that, most likely have more tyre options also

Then you can keep your 19s and it will be easier to change the wheels yourself instead of having to go to tyre shop to do the change, waiting the 2 hours or whatever there....

Whatever you do, just make sure you have a maximum tolerance across front and rears of 1% or less. Or your transver case is going to shudder and you will hate your life.

@Stephan22411 does your car have M Sport suspension or standard suspension?

I have Standard suspension and the car does have a slight floaty ride when tackling road undulations.

I figure with M Sport suspension, there may be less give/rebound, but not sure if that would be good for off-roading?

Standard suspension. I really just can't stand the runflats on dirt roads, not planning on anything crazy just want more versatile tires. The closest I've found are 255/50/r19(General Grabbers AT3) vs OEM 245/50/r19. I've seen loads of posts online of people fitting these without any issues as the arches are actually really deep and the extra 10mm width doesn't make contact anywhere. Just need to have a chat with insurance about it first. If too many issues then I might opt for 18" rims instead as they have waaaaaay more tire options.

Hi bud

I have 17inch Falken Wildpeak Trail all terrain tyres on my F25. Brilliant tyre! Absolutely smooth with no noise and pretty strong sidewalls as I have endured a few potholes in the Berg etc. with no issues.

Check if the Wildpeaks are available in your size.

Nice, thanks man, I had a look and unfortunately they only have them in sizes that would drastically change my overall diamater, heard theyre great tires though.

Went to a shop today, these definitely look like the best option. Unfortunately not available in my rim size so I would have to get some 18 inch rims.
Interestingly, the cost of 4x Wilpeaks AND 4 new 18 inch rims(A-line) is prettymuch the same as just a new set of Perellis that I have now. Might just do an early tyre swop and get it done with.
Very tricky to find nice rims for 5/112 bolt diameter though.

Have a look at my old thread here:

Unfortunately these were sold but if you find a set of G20 18s they will work nicely as per the pics I posted.
