2016 520d F10 - Coolant Leak & EGR Issues After Collection

Hey guys, I need some help/advice.

So we picked up a 2016 520d F10 B47 engine (first BMW btw) the other day and immediately noticed a "low coolant" warning on the dash. Mentioned it to the dealer right away.

Anyway, after collecting it, we drove about 500m to fill up fuel and top up the coolant (we just used water since there was no coolant on hand). A few km into the freeway, we got an overheating warning saying to drive moderately. Pulled over, let the car cool for like 40 mins, and the warning disappeared. We then drove it to a safe spot to check things over.

Next morning, we checked the coolant again and the reservoir was completely empty. So there’s clearly a leak somewhere. We hooked up ISTA while driving home and noticed the coolant temps shot up once, threw a warning, and then dropped back down quickly. After that, it ran fine and temps were normal. We're thinking maybe it was air bubbles since the system wasn't properly bled and it was just water.

Diagnostics point to a possible EGR leak (couldn't find any other error codes ISTA), and we’re planning to take it to a mechanic who used to work at BMW and actually has the same engine in his own car. I phoned BMW about it and they said there's no active recall on this car for the EGR, and if it's faulty, they’d only replace the EGR valve, not the whole cooler. But they also mentioned the full EGR system replacement would be around R21k... which is wild. I did get the car for 100k under market value so I do have some wiggle room for repairs.

So here's my question: would it make more sense to just blank the EGR, stop the coolant flow to it, and map it out? That was kind of the plan anyway because I wanted to Stage 1 the car. Just don’t wanna waste money replacing something unnecessarily when a blank and map might fix it long-term.

Has anyone been through this or have advice? Just don't want to run into the EGR fire issue so I've parked it in the garage until I can get it to the mechanic.

I cannot remember if i did an egr delete on my previous 2016 F30 320d with B47 motor but it could be as i sold the car about three years ago, ( i have done the egr delete on my son's B57 3l diesel F25 X3 after he suffered a stuck egr valve and burnt holes in the inlet manifold) but i would strongly suggest you do the delete as soon as possible. You might have to import the kit from Darkside Developments in the UK. I do not think that there is someone in SA that makes the kit. I recently did the egr delete as well as the swirl flaps delete on my N57 motor and it is straight forward. Egr delete is actually quite easy on the 2l motor in the F10. Did that on my previous 2013 F10 520d but was the N47 motor. I also suggest you ask on the Forum for other owners if they are interested to do the same and import a few kits simultaneously.

I am in the same situation as you now, and as someone who already has the software side done, I recommend doing the hardware side just for peace of mind with the coolant leaks. They're bound to happen at some point so you might as well get it done now to either fix the coolant leak or rule it as a leak site.

I have ordered the EGR blank off plates from Custom Tuning in CPT today. I will provide a full update on them once they arrive.

Please do let us know if you've since fixed the coolant leak and advise what it was causing the leak thereof.

My advice would be to get a pressure test done to figure out where the leak is coming from.

It could be wide host of things as to why you may be losing coolant. Waterpump, Oil Filter housing, Thermostat, cracked expansion tank, etc.

One thing to note, my ISTA threw a possible EGR coolant leak code after draining coolant.

It seems like this is standard when coolant level drops due to the historical recalls on EGR leaks.

This does not indicate that the leak does indeed come from the EGR, I would thoroughly inspect to determine where the leak is.

Code below, this is apparantly an internally code generated by ISTA and not from the car.

In my case the code was triggered by coolant drop due to draining it even though I have no leak or coolant loss anywhere.unnamed.png
