Being the only interior parts to show some wear they had to be attended to. I shopped around and the dealers say they are not manufactured anymore due to only 420 RHD convertibles worldwide I can understand that the window switches in this orientation would not be available.

So I decided to strip them down and had them recoated. And must I say I cant be more happy with the outcome. It matches and looks perfectly OEM.

Absolutely loving this thread, epic work and maximum attention to detail.

Makes me want to buy an M6 🫣

This is just fantastic, 10 internet points to you for this epic attention to detail

It is amazing how much work (time and money) actually goes into an old BMW that was advertised (and looks like it is) as a very clean car in excellent condition and which sold for a premium compared to other M6s out there. Not a negative comment in any way, just a bit of a reality check on what it takes to own an older car - something I have been learning recently

Great work on dealing with the nitty grittys of older car ownership. whether its a Premium car, or a base model car, people often forget about the small things. great attention to detail here.

The base started off with was definitely one of the cleanest I could find but you know on an older car there is always something that needs attention.

On the flipside the e63/64 M6 similar to the z4m trade at a discount to what you get in a similar e46 m3 or e60 m5 so that leaves some room for spending whilst you get the exact same driving experience. Kind of a value pocket in my eyes.

Some of the stuff done like injectors might not be crucial but it certainly makes the s85 more bulletproof and with some diy skills one could go a long way.

Thing is from my little experience on the s85. If you were to buy one at market with no preventative maintenance done one would easily need to spend 100-150k if not diying to get it to some decent standard. And thats the same for e46 and e90 m3.

Bearings 40k
Throttle actuators 30k
Injectors on s65 and s85 70k at dealer prices
Smg service 10k
On first gen s85 vanos line and solenoids probably 30k. Luckily from later 07 models they have the upgraded components so buying a s85 from late 07 upwards does have advantages.

This came out brilliant. Who did you use or what did you use to recoat them?

A local guy in Centurion specializing in interior repairs. Pm me and will send you his number.

He sanded and prepped the surface and then colour matched spray painted it.
That came out great,

Please share details, I need to do redo some interior parts

A little update. Buy an old M car it will be fun they said.

So notwithstanding my needs to know that everything is always as it should be on the car I have changed oil twice since my ownership and about 2000-3000km driven. Castrol edge 10w60, stuff is not cheap.

First time round I noticed some small metal shavings in the oil filter housing, very fine, some magnetic and others not. Decided to put in new oil and filter and drive another 100-200km and then change oil filter again, its easy enough. Could have been some residual from previous work on one head or bearings.

After about 100km changed oil filter to find some again, not a lot, one or two specs but too much for my liking.

This led me to consider changing the oil cooler, could be residual from there although I find it highly unlikely since it sits after the oil filter in the flow pattern.

I also assembled an adaptor to test oil pressure, easiest for me was at oil filter housing drain hole. This car does not have a oil pressure reading, only a sensor to warn if too low. The oil pressure sensor can also be tied in at the spot of the oem oil pressure sensor.

Oil pressure seemed perfect at around 6 bar cold idle.

After oil cooler change got engine to temp to test pressure across all rev ranges.

With the new oil (2nd round) and new oil filter in.

When I disconnected the oil pressure gauge from the filter housing I inspected the oil that drained again, and to my disappointment found another shaving, even after brand new oil and just getting up to temp once.

So into the belly it is. The culprit must be found.

At the moment crank and bearings look decent but the vanos pump does struggle to turn a bit.

I will open up the pumps to inspect and see how to continue from there.

Open to any advice or other recommendations.
