Llew's 957 Cayenne

I did, but digging into it, it is R35000 for a R5K Android headunit with a Porsche skin and 10 year old SOC.
But when you are done abusing the Cayenne you could always pull it out and move it to your next porker, like say a 997.

Yoh, it was 25k back when it was a launched, 10k price bump is a bit for something that has not changed and probably got cheaper to make over time.

Even at R25K that's a big stretch. If I had the PCM 3 I'd have just done a carplay adapter TBH. Alot of issues reported from guys who went this route as well. \

The Cayenne version also wouldn't have fitted the 911s anyway. It even looks quite different to the 997/987 version (but has the same software/platform)

Interesting, the big booohaa back when they came out was it it was universal for Gen1 Cayenne, 997.1 and 987

Available for them all, but not one universal unit for them all. They are all different SKUs. The single DIN PCCM can be used across the newer cars that came with the base single DIN systems and a storage bin though.

I will add though @tamgoem if I had any more sophisticated of a system (eg: Bose/optical/steering controls) or any nicer of a car (like a 997) then this would have been the route I went without a doubt and paid the 'tax'. I would love it if more manufacturers were able to offer this kind of PnP thing as opposed to relying on AliExpress vendors or someone chopping into your car. There have been more than a few friends that have had guys just saying 'well best to rewire everything cos factory wiring is crap or optical is a mess to work with' and hacking apart your interior in the process (only to discover they have used thinner wire than stock in a larger/fancier sheath :ROFLMAO:)

How many E-series owners would jump at the chance to do a full iDrive-style upgrade to latest gen or even just OEM-looking and behaving carplay with a screen (or screen and button combo unit) that fills the space and doesn't look like a fascia plate was obviously added?

Would have killed for anything even vaguely OEM looking on the Z4M. Anything like that with a weirdly shaped unit means you're stuck with exceptionally ill-fitting situations years later if you go aftermarket, or have to keep writing CDs - I can't even recall the last computer I had that had an optical drive at all.

I so badly wanted the single din for the E36 but at R17k it wasn't an option. Cool for aircooled Porsches though.

There are definitely a few single-DIN carplay options now similar to the below one that have a "somewhat OEM" or period look to them as opposed to single din chassis with a floating ipad attached. Things to watch out for are overheating, lack of wireless carplay/android auto and very low voltage (half-volt) pre outs if they have functional pre-outs at all. These little SOCs don't have the greatest of thermal solutions and I guess to combat this, many of them have woeful internal power outputs (and quality).

Is there no ali-express version that looks similar?

This is my biggest issue. People hacking into your very expensive to repair cars wiring.

A very minor mod was some LED lighting. I did the same to my F10 M5 and it made the cabin feel a bit 'lighter' inside - especially being a dark colour. Very easy to get this done on the Cayenne as they are mostly T10s and once you have the trick to opening the housings it is pretty easy.

I ordered a pack from Takealot (here: https://www.takealot.com/t10-led-park-5smd-white-colour-10-pieces/PLID71580465 )

I ran out for the footwells and I need a 41mm Festoon for the rear, but will get to them soon.

These LEDs seem to do the job. Happy with the colour and brightness. Time will tell whether they last or not.

Belated congratulations 👏

Any updates?

Thanks 🙏

No news to report other than regularly looking at E3 Turbo pricing and for suitable specs :ROFLMAO: Rand for rand it has probably been the best value I've gotten out of a car in 10 years. My wife loves it (which is all that matters in the end) especially after wireless AA/Carplay added. I find myself using it more often than not, more so to avoid the school run and mall parking lot dings/dents.

So far it has basically 'paid for itself' as far as I'm concerned. We would have paid in the 'value' of the Porsche by now if continuing with the C200 or trading into a similar vehicle. I am hoping my Mrs does get tempted into a GTS or Turbo because I'd do an overlanding build with it.

The only 'downside' is the fuel economy which isn't great on short runs, but not a biggie for me and the VR6 noise makes up for it. I would love to do an exhaust/decat on it because it really is a lovely sound - a few too many projects in the way of that though. It has eaten up many dirt and gravel roads and been rendered filthy by my beagle and dachshund a good few times which was the intention. I am actually (believe it or not) almost due for another service on it! I had a very different impression of these before having one. I was tempted (naturally) to change the rims, but that is also some project for the distant future (if ever) - maybe with the next tyre change. I can see why every SUV around here that isn't a Diesel or M BMW is a Cayenne/Macan. I don't know how Porsche supports so many with only a few dealerships :ROFLMAO:

The thing I personally like a lot is the way it is put together which is of good quality (even if it is based on VW underpinnings) but also not very complicated as far as things like this go. Eg: I was thinking I'd need to change out the high/low/sport buttons, but I was able to strip it apart, clean it well and lubricate the necessary bits without need for special tools or watching videos. The PCB/switches etc also look like they would be easy for me to DIY repair in future replacing surface mounted components or reflowing joints rather than replacing entire units at great cost. With my skills I wouldn't dream of doing this with eg: a BMW control unit or module of any kind that I've come across. Rinse and repeat for working on the audio system (granted I didn't have the optical/Bose system). The engine bay (in V6 form anyway) is easy to navigate and it is generally very 'repairable' (see headlight vid below)... probably more so than Hondas and BMWs I've owned over the years - there is a lot to love about the Cayenne LOL.

Between Cafe 9 and Porsche I also have had nothing but good things to say - somehow (as with BMW) parts are often cheaper at Porsche than they are at Goldwagen... even for things like bootlid shocks where you'd think the parts sharing between the Q7 and VW would make Goldwagen much cheaper. It wouldn't surprise me if it was cheaper for Touareg and Q7 owners to source some parts from Porsche instead of Audi/VW/GW :ROFLMAO: For the cars I've had so far, it seems GWs model counts on you not checking with a dealership on pricing 🤷‍♂️ .

Here is something to tempt you..

My 911 is out of Plan, so I got quotes from Cafe9 for minor and major servicing for future. For oil changes, not much different to Porsche, so will use them to ensure dealer stamp for usual services. For big stuff, will try Cafe 9.

Who are you using for servicing? (Apologies if you already covered this earlier on in thread)
