F10 M5 vs F10 530d - Cost of Ownership after M/Plan

Maybe because I am late to the exhaust and power party……its a totally different world.

Never loved listening to down shifts like I do now……..! That power band build up mmhhhhhh!

I enjoy the 530d for what it is, best seats (multi-contour), best economy and power combo…..thats why I have kept it

But…..the V8, whilst economically pathetic, gives me the best driving experience. I take longer routes just so I can have more seat time. Its a lived experience difficult to put into words.

If you can afford the maintenance and fuel bill, then the m5 is your answer.

If you need to budget and affordability and consumption is the main thing, then 530d or 535d.

There's nothing more to it...one will keep you sane, the other will make you happy

Thanks for the comments. It remains a tough call. The 640d option is quite a curve ball. I have always admired the shape / look of that 640d shape in both Coupe and Gran-Coupe. It baffles me that they sell so cheaply (in relative terms of course) for the amount of car one gets. I'm not in a particular rush so will keep eyes open and ear to the ground on all 3 ideas. The M5 certainly would be more of a "heart" than a "head" purchase of that I am certain.

Most big german cars sell cheap vs original sale price. Why? The maintenance scares, which in some cases are real (buy a lemon and lose sleep and hair) and in some cases unheard of. Many enthusiasts drive the cheap bargains and have no issues. They spend the purchase price savings in preventative maintenance and service.

Key is in careful selection of the car

Go M5..make sure all preventative maintenance is done..clean service record..no issues. 530D are nice cars.."nice".
This is so true. I love driving my Dad's 530d. It just does everything so well. But.....there's no M car soul:ROFLMAO:

So this never panned out:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:. I ended up with an e46 330d Touring manual which is a beaut to drive and have just swapped out SWAMBO's X3 20d for an F15 X5 30d Msport with 90k km on the clock. Its a unicorn in that it doesn't have a panoramic roof which I am chuffed about but has every other extra one could think of just about. Maybe one day I'll still get an M car but for now we'll do the diesel thing. Have to say that X5 is absolutely incredible to drive.

The Touring for Maputo. Its nice and incognito:);)
Ah nice! A remap and downpipe is in order. Awesome for consumption, and nice for the Schoemanskloof section. Especially that first long uphill as you turn left onto the Shoemanskloof pass

Committing a crime by not posting pics of the touring!

...congrats on the additions

Need to see this 330d Touring...who built it or is it an import?

Also, side question: Is the N57 diesel really so reliable? My mate owned a F15 30d with around 140k km and the thing was constantly breaking down - EGR leaked, then some plastic coolant pipes broke. He eventually sold it as he was scared of needing to do the timing chains. A massive job apparently. I dont know much about them, did he maybe have a lemon?

My BIL bought one for his wife as a demo in 2015, it’s now on 180k km and hasn’t skipped a beat, nothing but regular services and tyres so far with only one major repair being the replacement of the bellows. There must have been other minor jobs along the way but nothing major other than usual wear & tear items according to him.

That’s actually the reason that I pulled the trigger on one for my SO. Ours still has a bit of plan left as I extended until June 2025 so it currently spends more time at the dealer than in our garage getting as much replaced as possible

According to the guys at bmw and many posts online, the 40d and 50d F15’s are the ones to stay away from if you’re keeping long term.

The N57 motor is extremely reliable IMO. We have two in the family that both run absolutely flawlessly and have done so for many years despite being tuned. The only issue both cars picked up apart from regular service items, was leaking oil filter housings.

3.0d has a single turbo

4.0d and 5.0d have the same motor with more turbos (a lot more heat in the engine bay, and a lot more that can go wrong).

3.0d is better for long term ownership.

4.0d motor is phenomenal, 3.0lt twin turbo is a great engine, when i had it in the 640d, i was very impressed with it.

the 5.0d motor is a tri-turbo setup, and that can be a problem to work on.
