F26 X4 28i thoughts

Hi all

I want to get your input on a car I’m considering buying, I don’t want to purchase something that has known issues that I missed.

A colleague of mine is selling his 2016 F26 X4 xDrive 28i. Appearance-wise the car is in mint condition, and according to him there hasn’t been any mechanical issues since he bought the car new - services yearly at BMW. I also know him to be a relaxed driver, no redlining.

The car has 70k km on the clock and he’s asking what they offered him for trade-in: R350k. Looking at similar models this seems like a good deal.

Now, this model has the 2.0l N20 motor (N20B20, 180kw)… although I read that post-2015 the timing chain guide issues has been addressed.

What are your thoughts on this deal? Is the milage too high for this engine? I’d appreciate any input.

Lots of concerns at hand...
Deciding factor (for me)...
If all underbody fluids have been changed, and this includes engine oil.

Hi

Personally, I feel the price is a bit high for a 28i. I assume the dealer is offering him deal assistance on the trade in to get him into another car.

I highly doubt that the used X3/X4 28i models listed on Autotrader currently will sell at those advertised prices. These cars will linger for longer on dealer floors until prices are slashed. There is a stigma to the 20i and 28i motors in their SUV application.

Rather go for a 20d model. Even with higher mileage than this 28i, it will be the better buy (assuming maintenance is up to date).

Just my view and open to correction.

Agree on the 20/30d. Is there a reason you want to buy an X4 outside of it being offered to you at a good deal? You may be better off expanding your search to a higher mileage X6 perhaps?

Great input, thanks everyone.
@TurboLlew I’m actually looking for a X3, but this deal came up. Knowing the owner had me think this is somehow a better deal.

Rather looking for a 2.0d makes sense.

X3 2.0d is a much better buy than the X4 28i in my opinion. You can get a real winner focusing your energy there.
