Exhaust modifications and warranty

Hi all. Recently purchased a G20 330 that’s still under motorplan. Overall happy with the car but looking for more sound from the exhaust. I’ve gotten a quote on an M performance exhaust from BMW but it’s in the region of R50k and I’m not willing to spend that at the moment. I’ve also considered doing a muffler delete. Does anyone know if this would void the warranty in South Africa?

This is a thorny issue.

If there is an exhaust related claim down the line, BMW may repudiate the claim by saying that you modded the exhaust and that it is not covered.

If, say, your engine packs up (of no fault from the exhaust mod), BMW can say that it was your exhaust mod that impacted the engine. You can call BS and fight them in court and you might win, but can you afford the legal fees and the time required to fight that case?

You cant even weld on exhaust tips, have to get the slip on type.
So no you cant do a muffler delete.

You can get an after market exhaust made that you can keep swapping if you ever need to take the car in but thats a mission in itself.

Put it this way, my handbrake button stopped working, BMW dint want to replace it because i had a blue stop/start button.
Lucky i just took it back home and put the original back but shows you the level they go through.

You will not win vs. BMW if it comes down to it.

Either pay for the M Performance exhaust or live with it until you can mod it yourself. The dealers are also under scrutiny by BMW and the cars themselves report a lot back to base nowadays too so they tend to not take chances anymore.

The problem with having an exhaust that you keep swapping (apart from having the space to store a big ass exhaust system) is also that if you are in serious trouble, the chances are the car is getting towed... to the nearest dealership usually... and you have zero control or chance to swap it out if you actually needed to anyway. BMW will actually take note of you trying to get your car to 'your trusted dealer' in such a situation :ROFLMAO: as guys have found out with suspended motor plans waiting for them.

The M Performance exhaust should not be 50K though... my mate had one done on his G20 330i for about 27K. Speak to Deago: Prices will have increased a bit but not by that much. I think it was the rear section.

Thanks all for the feedback. Definitely does not seem worth the risk. Will look into the M performance exhaust again. @TurboLlew I’m new to the platform, how would I get in touch with Deago?

I have been chatting to turbolew about exhuasts I didn't know there was a BMW option. So maybe I should look into that

I was in the exact same boat and bought the M performance exhaust for my 330i. I ended up paying 47k with fitment. I am extremely happy with it and actually sounds very nice. If you are in the Durban area and would like to hear it, let me know
