Panelbeater recommendations for metallic BMW

Hi guys. Another panelbeater recommendation thread but I'm looking for something specific here. I have a titanium silver E46 with some scuffs on the front bumper. I also want a few other touchups here and there. Has anyone had a really good experience with BMW metallic paint matching from a panelbeater anywhere around Pretoria or Joburg? Even the East Rand would be cool if it's someone good. Car's in good condition but there's probably a bit of sun fading, so I really want someone who is proven good at metallic paint matching. Any recommendations? Thanks all.

May I ask who you ended up using and were you satisfied with their workmanship?
Hi. I haven't actually been yet. Some stuff came up which made me have to put a bunch of stuff on hold. Still on my mind to get it done, but I haven't had an opportunity.

Hi,

I didn't greet first...
Apologies 🙈

I have a 2011 E90 which I'd like to get some work done on (or a full body respray if I get a reasonable quote).

Was hoping I might get some feedback from you (which would save me the effort of searching for a good place myself 😅)

I have had some accident repair work done, by Auto Body Specialists (in Midrand), and I can't complain. I'll probably just head there and see what they quote.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated 🙏

No problem. Is your E90 metallic? If it's a full body respray, then no issues obviously. You'll just get whatever colour's on the VIN for your car. But if they're doing spot work or panel work, then yeah, metallic can be a mission to match, so ask them to maybe show you metallic work they've done in the past, whoever you go with. Ask what their paint-matching procedure is and if they use paint-matching devices and so on and so on and see if they sound confident about working on metallics. There can be a lot to it to get spot work on a metallic right. My dad was in the trade, so I know all about how metallics can be a bit tougher with the metallic specks/flecks and matching to faded paint and the fact that they may not even make the exact type of paint the car was originally sprayed in anymore or if they do, they might not use the same manufacturing procedure anymore, etc., etc. You need someone good. So whoever it is, ask them to show you proof pics of past work on metallics they've done or if they've got a current metallic in the shop they've worked on and see how it looks.

Also, is your E90 a DCT? Just curious.

The accident repair work that ABS Midrand did on my car was done after a taxi drove into me (no injuries to anyone).

Rear bumper and rear passenger side door were replaced (I still had extended Motorplan active, so insurance said replace).

Their paint matching and overall workmanship was pretty decent (i.e.: hard for the untrained eye to tell that repair had been done, even when parked in the sun).

Nope to DCT. I'm in a 320d N47N.

Thanks for sharing details and, yes, I would definitely be more comfy with going with full body (just scared to imagine what the pricing will look like 😅 )

lol shit that's hectic. Well, then you've got your own extensive proof of how good they are on paint matching if they did that much work. Might keep them in mind myself now.

Get a few quotes. It's what I'll do when I go. Guess I'll visit the other two ouks that were mentioned in this thread and your guys and maybe some others. I got a quote also from a guy here near me in Pretoria a few months back. Competent dude, good proof of past work, but I wasn't stoked about his setup though. For me, it's got to be hundreds. Metallics really can be a mission and I always want to avoid having a full panel, door or bumper done on a metallic. With my experience from working with my dad I can always, always tell bumper vs bumper or door vs door or bonnet vs front fenders, boot vs rear fenders when a full door or panel, etc. is sprayed. I'd only be okay with full roof. I prefer spot work when possible but then you need a talented primer and sprayer. So yeah, full spray or excellent spot repairs is best imo. But like you say, full spray with several good coats can get pricey though. Metallics can be a headache lol.

Maybe I'll just buy this Alpine White E93 I've had my eye on instead :)

Other than ABS Midrand, there's a guy named Sander in Kramerville. He does very high end cars like exotics etc. for the reputable dealers.
His work is brilliant. It's not often where the attention to detail is so evident in a panelshop's work.
Recently saw his work on a metallic iX and it was flawless.

I can't recall the shop name but it is in a pan handle so you won't even spot it from the road.

Okay, thanks. I'll definitely keep him mind too.
