discussion Keep the wheels or not?

Hi all. So my new (preloved) G01 came with the very beautiful 21 inch upgraded wheels, 245\40 front and 275\35 rears. They look amazing.

However, I'm more of a function over form guy so I have 2 issues:

1) replacing those tires is going to give me a heart attack
2) with the state of our roads, is a paper-thin 35 or even 40 profile not asking for trouble? One pothole and.....

So, my question is, do I just appreciate the wheels, or do I downgrade (if it's even possible) to a much more sensible 245\55 18inch wheel all round? That's what my old F25 has and they are amazing (although even on that one I got the upgrade, not the standard wheel).

Can you even fit such a big change down? Will it clear the brakes? 21 to 18 is a hugely smaller wheel, I'd even be worried about sensors picking things up right with that big of a change. I can't advise on your specific case, but in general I'd run the smallest wheel that looks good and that works well.

Yeah that's exactly my issue. I don't know what's the smallest wheel it can take.

So the spec sheet for the G01 has wheel options all the way down to 17 inch. Of course that doesnt mean all cars can take them. The 30d DOES come standard with a set, and gets upgraded with the M Sport pack (and then whoever spec'd this car went one better).

So, any tire guys: is this a feasible idea or should I just make peace with the big pretty wheels?

I would ask the dealer to swop the rims with those of a poverty spec GO1 X3 20d.
I have 245/50 19s on my 20d and they handle rough roads very well.

Unless you live in a place with pristine roads, I would personally advise against 20 or 21 inch wheels on an SUV.

On another point, did you get a space saver spare wheel?

No, no spare wheel. Car wasn't spec'd with one and those stingy guys wouldn't give you ice in a snowstorm🤣

If I ask them to swap though, what do I say? Just a straight swap? Seems I'd be losing because these rims cost a fortune even when new.

Ooorr just buy your desired set and sell your old wheels...? There's many choices on the classifieds, that don't require the gymnastics you're considering putting yourself through.

That's a good point🤣🤣🤣
My only issue is that it's so much easier getting the dealer to swap than having to worry about selling my wheels...

My only concern with buying second hand is how can I be sure that they're not buckled\warped? I'm sure every seller will claim his wheels are perfect.

When I did a wheels swop on my A4 B8, I arranged the swop at TWT. TWT checked the wheels that where being swopped for both parties.

In your case, ask the seller to meet you at TWT and say your purchase is subject to the wheels being checked as not damaged by TWT.
