Found the E90 320d replacing the E82 120d

Greetings ladies & gents.

After selling my E82 120d quicker than I anticipated

, I finally found this beautiful 2012 E90 320d LCI with 160 000KM on the ODO. Flew down to Gauteng for the inspection and purchase and drove the car back to Cape Town and I must commend, compared to the E82, the E90 feels much more planted, softer and handles higher speeds very comfortable with reduced wind noise. I also found it to be more fuel efficient- averaged 5.4l/100km with an average speed of 140km/h.

Am a bit down on power though since the 120d had a downpipe and stage 1 file, but everything else in the E90 makes up for that.

Could have saved a bit more for the F30, but the E90 once again, in the M Sport trim especially, is such a timeless design, with quality materials used in the interior and hydrolic steering wheel had me made an easy decision.

BMW really knew what they were doing when they made the E90.

Regards

Conngrats, enjoy, I find the E90 is, also better handling all over than the E82, but both of them going nowhere currently.

Affirm, for a 10 year old car, this E90 320d still feels lightyears better, in every aspect, than newer sedans I've driven. I think the E90/E82 might go down as a future classic.

Congrats! Hope you have many more happy and carefree kms.
Your 1 series looked hot and here I was looking for a E82 120d in the spec you had when I found my E90

Thanks so much! The E82 120d is a real gem and I enjoyed every minute in her, but the E90 is just much more refined.

Gonna try to keep this thread active for future potential E90 320d buyers. Here are some additional pictures of her.
So far so good. Pulls very well and mind-blowing fuel consumption (6.0l/100km due to combined cycle and some spirited driving here and there), but I still miss the sound and brute grunt of the E82 120d (150wkw and 450nm). The previous owner had the vibration damper pulley inspected and it checked out 100% and replaced the waterpump and thermostat.

The car has a full service history at BMW with regular oil services which is a key factor into considering buying diesel BMWs. Because of the mileage, I'm a bit skeptical to have the gearbox serviced at ZF at this stage. Will see how things goes.

I have absolutely no regrets buying this gem. A really good bang for one's buck!

She looks beautiful! Your fuel consumption makes me jealous

Just a question wrt the ZF service; I have noticed all over the forum people say that past a certain mileage ZF won't do a service on the gearbox, yet speaking briefly with a shop that offers this service too (Not ZF themselves), the chap reckons he's never heard of this fact.
This leaves me feeling quite conflicted lol

This is true, it is dependent on the overall wear and condition of your gearboxes clutches. For us who have been through this process and gotten our gearboxes serviced by ZF themselves (and quite a few others too). Not so much after a certain mileage but rather the condition and wear on the gearbox. Chat to Nico at Zf and he will transparently tell you the pros and cons in relation to your gearbox's condition.

I think at this stage I'm just gonna take care of the gearbox by means of not accelerating hard under low rpm's- that's when your gearbox takes a lot of strain. For instance, if you are behind a truck or convoy, rather downshift manually to a lower gear to overtake than having to kickdown under acceleration. For that second or so before kickdown, the gearbox is under immense pressure at say 1500rpm's full throttle. Also, a lot of in-town driving causes multiple gear-changes. So, if a car has done a lot of highway driving, I doubt that you have anything to worry about. Lastly, I've seen some E90 and F30 diesel way above 300 000km with the same oil it came out with, and it still shifts effortlessly.

Gents, my 320d has a decat (hollowed out cats) without any software. Would it be advisable to fit an aftermarket downpipe when I take the car for a stage 1 file, or would the decatted OEM downpipe suffice with the software?

TIA

It would suffice with the current decat bud.

I've gone that route.
Stage 1 + egr delete + decat (hollowed out oem housing)

Night and day difference.
