(My) new Z4M Roadster

Hows it going everyone.

I've been in the market for an s54 motor for a few years now, struggling with the choice between an e46 m3 and a z4m (roadster or coupe).

Glad to say I'm a relatively new owner of a white z4m roadster. Ended up going this route for a number of reasons but basically at this point in my life, this car fits the picture perfectly (I've got it alongside a 79 Merc 450SLC in case I need the four seats (I know, petrol, lol)).

Anyways, here's some pics of her:

I did make the purchase knowing there'd be some costs coming up:
  1. The satnav screen is dead - its a question of whether its the satnav unit, or the actual screen - anyone know how to test this?
  2. Rodbearings to be replaced - she's sitting on 111k km. I know, standard question that's probably be answered - where to go in CT to have this done? Seems a lot of the known guys are JHB side.
  3. Vanos will need refreshing at some point - Basically asking the same question. Wheres the best place to have the preventative stuff ticked off without shipping the car two and from JHB? Happy to look at dealers, but are they doing the work well?
In other news, I've seen a few guys around the city, would be cool to link up at some point. Who's best to chat to, to arrange something like this?

Jay.

Congrats on the new ride.

I had the rod bearings on my Z4M replaced by Donford BMW in Somerset West at quite a reasonable cost (R12k) including a 12 month warranty. They have a tech in the workshop who is very good at this job and the only one who does this rod bearing work.

I must say...one of the very few cars I personally think looks great in white (not a fan of a white car). And I think it especially looks great in white with the top down. And I think it will look even better with stock colour rims - but that is your choice and taste :) I hope you have great fun in it and welcome.

Great, great looking car! I've always loved a Z4M in white, though I'm a coupe fan myself.

For the satnav screen maybe investigate aftermarket options to replace? The original screen is nearing 15-20yrs old so it looks pretty awful compared to any modern tech.

Congrats! you couldnt have lived in a better city to enjoy that exact car. Must be so awesome putting the top down and enjoying hearing that S54 sing, with that scenery to boot.

Thanks for the comments everyone, really appreciated.

I’ve contacted Donford BMW and garage 808 for the maintenance. Waiting on costing and I’ll update everyone on that.

Just to update everyone:

Car has been booked in with Garage 808 for:
1. Vanos refurb;
2. Valve adjustments;
3. Rod bearings.

We're looking at around 2-4 weeks for everything to be done. She'll be going in next month, they're booked up until then.

FYI Adele at Garage 808 has been fantastic to correspond with. Will update on the services once I know.

Th next thing I'll need to deal with going forward is the navigation screen not working. The motor and everything works, screen is just still dead.

I guess I've got two options for this:
1. Fix it with stock parts - anyone in CT able to look at this and see what actually needs fixing?
2. Fit a more modern solution in. Issue is I'd want to at the very least keep the stock look - basically fitting a newer screen/ tablet into where it currently sits. Anyone have an idea on how to do this?

The z4m has the same screen as the x3, pretty chilled DIY is you are keen! You can pick them up second hand too unless you want to buy a new one...mine used to be blank but after opening the radio section, the wiring was just loose. What are they doing for the Vanos refurb? Just seals and a clean or are you getting another Exhaust hub :)

Awesome, thanks for letting me know. From the research i've done, the issue could be with the navigation drive in the middle there. Not quite sure how to pinpoint the issue, but maybe what I'll do is try open up the radio section first and see whats going on there.

These are the parts they're ordering for the vanos repair:

Tappet cover gasket
6x spark plug tube seals
13x tappet cover bolt seals
2x tappet cover bolt seals
12x bolts
12x bolts
Vanos gasket
2x washers
2x washers
2x diaphragm springs & pressure plates
2x washers
Vanos Seal Repair Kit
Vanos Rattle Repair Kit
Vanos oil pump disc drilling
Sealing plate
