Project E36 M3 Street - Build and Document Thread

So here we go again.

A few Fanatics reached out for me to document a build I’ve been working on, especially as it seems quite out there, I’ve kept it to socials (below), but will start posting updates here too.

The short version of how this started.

Really missed owning an E36 M3
Something special (to me) about the platform in drivability, driver experience, that is old, but modern, but classic, but fun, but, but, but. Let’s just say it really appeals to me as an overall drivers car that seems timeless in design.

Learnt that owning collectors grade cars (even though I have one or two) is quite torturous as you can’t enjoy them as much as one may want to.

Built an E28 M5 as a street car, but values have gone up so much and it’s built/restored so well that I feel bad driving it for it’s intended purpose. (Same problem as above)

Always wanted to do a full custom build, let’s call it OEM+ or OEM++

Want to create a car that hits all the senses.
A driver focused street legal E36 M3.
Goals are: Reduce weight, increase acceleration, better braking, cornering ability and stability, stance and mostly importantly to increase cabin sound of induction and exhaust. All this should lead to “Sheer Driving Pleasure” or sheer smiling pleasure

Here goes.

Picked up an E36 M3 for next to nothing.
Some on here will know the extensive amount of work Bruce and his team put into it mechanically a few years back. (Will share pics of the work from back then in the first few thread posts)
Since Bruce spent many hours on the car those years back. It’s hardly been driven (maybe 2000k’s), standing in the sun for long periods and overall the owner didn’t have the finances, passion and time to maintain or improve the car.

The good is that I got it on the (relatively) cheap, hardly any milage since it was mechanically sorted.

The bad, the paint started to crack, clear coat started to fail, trim looks a bit worn and a few other small cosmetic issues.

The exciting, is that I get to build something that is unique, purpose built and sends my endorphins rushing while building, looking for parts, ways to improve the car etc…. till completion.
I guess what’s not so exciting is how much M parts cost, some parts are going, or are already NLA. For what I want to build I need to rely on international shipping, local SARS clearing, customs, postal service etc, and hope that I actually receive the upgrades/parts/spares.

A few pics from those years back when it was at close to its best.

Next post will be the work that got it to the photos above, really just to show mechanically overall how good it is (also nice to document what was done), followed by the state I got the car in.

Like many others here I closely followed the restoration process of this car, incredibly sad that it had to go to such a careless owner though. Looking forward to this project.

I hope you've again chosen Bruce and his team to get this beautiful machine to it's next phase.

Going to try do a lot of the work myself, with the help of industry leaders as well as outsource here and there.

Bruce has moved to doing large trucks, massive farming rigs and Land Cruisers

Pretty much all key areas of the car.
Engine - Suspension - Drivetrain
The pics below being close up highlights and the pics above giving and overall condition. Shows just how much work had to go into the car
Have always been a stickler for a car feeling and driving like new.
Never wanting to be driving a car worrying about if I will get to the destination.

Spares and repairs then started.
Hours past liked minutes back then. Knowing how much of an improvement we would be making to the car kept the enthusiasm, motivation and dedication at an all time high.

From serving injectors, replacing worn covers, down to nuts and bolts used - Bruce's attention to detail was something to really appreciate.

Quick mention: Back then, I footed the bill for the entire build / restore.
Why so you may ask?
It was as a gift for my cousin, growing up we always admired the E36 M3 platform. It was truly an inspirational and aspirational car, something we could never afford but could always admire.
Back then, this build was (and is still) close to my heart and would always be treated as if it was my own.
As time passed, I had a few good outcomes in life and decided to pay it back.

Work in progress quickly started to turn into end results.
Each passing day brought us closer to completion.
I remember working night after night. When spares or parts were on order we would complete other areas of the car. This meant we were constantly inspecting the car whilst working on it. Sometimes picking up small things that would later be changed or improved.

Some of the photo results below

Summary photos are always the most amazing to look at.
Before and afters allow us to truly appreciate the work, car and achievement.

Even today, looking at these photos give me goosebumps.
An entire car transformation, chassis, engine, suspension, drivetrain, wheels and interior make over.
The attention to detail was and is still remarkable

Aaaaaand that's how we got the car looking, driving and feeling as good as new.
Better or OEM+ parts where we could, leaving no stone unturned.

Next part of the cars journey, as well as a personal life story is both sad and inspiring.
Will take me a few days to try summarize in words...
For those enjoying the thread so far, stay tuned for the end of the last chapter and the beginning of a new one.

The previous owner asked if he could keep the car at my place for a while as he had no space to park and store it. (March 2019 just before hard lock down 1)
He had to man up and help look after his family (dad, mom and siblings) a few years back after his father got really ill.
That was about 6 years ago, I watched him move home and take on family responsibilities that are truly admirable.
Over the past 6 years, the car just stood and understandably so.
When asked early this year for parking space, I was more than happy to oblige.

On helping him move it, the tyres were aged and cracked, the petrol was stale (1/4 tank) and the battery was long gone.
Getting her going was relatively quick, 2 trips and we were back in the game.
I had a set of 18's from my previous e36, a battery I pulled from another car and we filled the car with a fresh tank of petrol.

Through most of Covid, I hardly touched or even thought of cars.
The car sat in my garage for months. Every now and then I would go downstairs wanting to get back into a car or project, but the stress levels and business pressures just didn't allow me to get into it.

Pictures of the car just chilling in the garage (after a half decent clean)
I did still take a few pics, reminiscing of my previous E36.
The 18" style 24's on the e36 chassis still makes my heart beat
Came across these reps many many years ago, they were on my previous M3 and the only thing I would sell with the car at the time.
