I Have the same issue my car is currently standing at home in the garage , on my way back from the show on saturday @mall of the south i had the abs failure, transmission failure and drivetrain malfunction on the idrive unit and the lights appeared all over the dashboard and advised to drive at a stable or moderate speed then the rev counter and speedometer dropped to zero and after a few jerks the car switched off everything locked and i was unable to move the car at all, i tried jumping the car it started i drove for around 2km and the car did the same thing and switched off tried jumping again and the car starts but the moment i remove the jumper cables the car switches off, i then got another battery just to get the car home the car started and i drove the car home, from what i know i have a 652 battery in the car when tested it was fine but it doesnt seem to work on the car anymore and another thing when jumping the car the cables spark which means there is a short in the car im clueless as to whats going on, any idea what could be the cause of this as im very lost as well, i was having an idea that something was going to go wrong because on a cold or hot start the car struggles alittle to start and the revs are always higher then usual that is on cold start its around 1300rmp and then after a while drops to normal which i would assume is 500-600rmp but on a hot start it starts at 800-900rmp and stays there for awhile before going down and even on a cold start after it drops to normal i switch off and start again and it goes up high again and i have to wait again till it comes back down to normal.

Any help and advise would be really appreciated ...

How is your alternator doing?

Not sure havent checked that yet ...

i have the car booked in for tomorrow and sent the battery to battery centre to have it charged just to see if it could still be a battery issue, someone also told me it could be the battery harness that could be faulty,

just alot of stress as i cant moved the car at all...

^^^ There was a recall on some E90's with the main battery feed to the front fuse box being problematic. Either this, or the junction box has given up the ghost.

Just an update guys, Sent the battery to Battery centre it had 1 dead cell and its a 652 apparently the e90 stardard battery is a 658 so hoping thats the issue, sending the car within the week to a mech in Ophirton (Aslam) so he can reset the system and battery to the car and he will do a full diagnostic test on the car as well to see if there are any other issues that may need attention.

Please keep us updated on this.

The 652 size battery did sound a bit too small for these cars as we have a bunch of electronics in the cars. Glad that you have got the right size battery now. :=):

Update:

Hi Guys

Just another update, so the car is back from the Mech and im still unable to drive the car, he did a diagnostic test and advised the Alternator could possibly be gone as the car just switches off when drive and needs to be jump started and the gearbox needs a service and the braking system needs to be flushed,

Any idea how much this would cost ?

Update:

Hi Guys so my car arrived last night back from the Mech apparently the alternator was gone and had to be replaced, which was quite a difficult task as apparently the alternator my car takes isnt an ordinary one, it runs off the computer box and due to my car being apparently limited due to the specs and extras that the car came with which is your idrive etc etc the alternator is diiferent which was advised by BMW (Joburg city Auto), so that being said after a being qouted R13990,00 by BMW i managed to source the part via the first mech i sent the car through to (Aslam) which he was able to get it for R4500, he replaced the alternator, reset and coded the new alternator and battery together to the car and my car is back driving 100% ...

:rollsmile::rollsmile::rollsmile:

Thanks for all the advise given thus far gents really appreciate it ...

Entire alternator gone? Wow. I would have tried just the regulator first. But at least u sorted now. As far as i know there is just 2 alternator versions. The bosch or valeo. And nothing special about them, just different brands.

Your FRM is busted. It's a big issue on the LCI cars. I do repair them for a loooot less than R8k. Send me a PM to discuss the way forward.

Hi Guys,

I have a 2009 E90 320d, after reading this I now know its an LCI (go easy on me, its my first BMW :fencelook:)

I had an issue where one day I was on my way to a meeting and stopped for coffee. Came back to my car, unlocked it, got in, put the key in, pushed the start button, waited for all the lights to go off, put my foot on the brake and pushed start.... and the only thing that started was my stress levels. Turns out that my car also had a 652 in it. Called BMW and they advised me to check my battery. I have a meter with me and the battery was at 11.9v. After a while the car started and I ended up getting a new 658 battery as BMW said it takes a 80amp battery. Once I put it in all has been fine.

I must note that I kept getting the low tire pressure warning and the warning for a blown globe which seems to have gone away since.

Out of curiosity, what does LCI stand for?

It stands for LOTS OF PROBLEMS.... in my opinion.... TBH i have owned many many BMW's.... this is the most troublesome car ever.... i absolutely hate it.... and i know hate is a strong word but i do.... :dunnoanymore: Ever other week its something else.... beginning to wonder if the previous owner knew that this was a problem child and thats why he sold it...:fencelook:

Rant over... :hammerhead:

Good grief this is complicated. I had the same issue on my 2007 BMW 328i sedan. Turned out it was a bad master control unit or ECU. Now it is happening on my 2007 BMW 328xi wagon which I got about 8 months ago. I am wrecked over this. I charged the battery last night ... no dice. Same warning lights came on ... sun roof, abs, 4x4, tire pressure, air bag etc. and I learned that when these lights do come on ... those systems do not work. I am hoping beyond hope it is not another bad ECU. I am hoping it is a bad battery. Any thoughts on this matter are greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of a good ... reasonable BMW mechanic in Atlanta, Ga please let me know ... thanks!

Hi guys, I'm new here. I know this thread is a bit old, but im looking for any help. I have a e90 320i 2011 model. It has a lots of warning lights on. DSC, airbag, abs, traction and a few others (see attached pic). In addition the entire cluster is not working (speedo, rev counter, fuel, economy). Also the central locking isn't working, remote won't lock or unlock car, however remote will open the front windows and sunroof if I press and hold the unlock button. In addition the indicators do signal but do not switch off after completing the turn. Also wipers not working. No comms from the obd port.
All external lights, headlights etc are working. Car drives fine.

I took the car to a workshop, after struggling a bit they did a hard reset on a module located near the fuse box. All was well for 2weeks and then the problem reappeared.

Disclaimer, the problem started about two days after helping out a stranger a shopping centre who had a flat battery.

Please any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
