Moving from a VW(Golf 5 GTI) to a BMW( F30 320D M Sport) now M135i/F30 335i

Howsit guys.

So contemplating changing my car. I have a Golf 5 gti at the moment and looking at getting a F30 320d Msport.

Always wanted to own a BMW and even when selling my previous cars there were no good clean 320d's i could find. Guess it just wasn't meant to be at the time.

My brother purchased a E90 320d M Sport about 2 years ago and he loves it( drive, performance, fuel economy etc) and he even said i should have purchased a 320d over the the Golf 5 gti lol

The Golf 5 gti is a good car and has given me no issues. I think i'm just looking for a change.

So, would you guys say that a F30 320d Msport would be a good replacement? NB: This will be my first BMW that i would potentially be purchasing.

youre from Cape Town im getting that vibe...i think youre a little lucky to have no issues with the 5..i like them...a F30 20d with downpipe and software would be a great replacement in my opinion. 100%...a smooth 8 speed auto that can also get some software.

By issues, i mean no major issues. preventative maintenance is key for the golf 5 gti and im also lucky that the previous owner was just as pedantic as i am about maintaining my cars lol but enough about the gti 😄

One car is a hot hatch and the other a diesel executive sedan, that should give you some indication of what to expect.. If you can up the budget, the 330d would give you the thrills you are looking for from a diesel power plant.

Your previous cars are all cars that scream and pop and bang at revs. The F30 320d is a different type of car even when tuned. The performance will be there but unless you for an aggressive exhaust and DP you won't have the same type of sound.

I own one and love it, very versatile - fast when it needs to be, economical when it needs to be. And a looker. It's a step up in terms of comfort also.

Preventative maintenance is just as important on these cars.

Also, it takes a while to find one that is the right spec, well maintained and priced right. You're gonna find a lot of dogs on your searches

I think it would be a great replacement, without a doubt much lighter on fuel too!

However perhaps worth going to test drive one and see how you find it, likely going to be quite different compared to the GTI 5.

Youl definitely notice the extra weight, but thatl be substituted with torque.
320ds are fine stock, reliable and solid, only you can judge if software and downpipe is necessary after a few months of ownership

it was the Tec & the Rsi as KP mentioned the 330D would be the one no doubt but ja a 320D in my opinion would need that software etc to wake it up a bit

then i think its a good upgrade

i have driven my brothers e90 320d msport and yes it is different from the gti but im sure the F30 would also drive differently from the e90.

guess i will just have to test drive a f30 and see from there if it is for me or not.

It'll be perfect for you then. It's a great mix of power and comfort. If maintained properly it'll be reliable too. There is always the option of a few mods later on

The f30 drives alot better that the e90...the zf8 gearbox is miles ahead compared to the zf6 found in the e90.

the only thing i am not sure about is mileage which i do not do alot of . did about 7000km in almost 2 years of ownership of the gti.

im sure i read something somewhere once that DPF filters etc get clogged up on the diesel if not driven regularly. Could be totally wrong though.

That is correct, short trips are not ideal ...you can always do a downpipe which negates that issue.

but still, short trips are not advisable, if you have no other choice, then frequent oil services (around 8k kms intervals) would be required.

I've driven both cars. Personally I'd keep the GTI unless you getting 330d/335i or something like that.
