I’m currently trying to help a friend with e46 Wagon with N42 engine. Had done a lot to get this car running due to the fact that it was butchered by a couple of bush mechanics and left for dead.
Currently only issue with it is mysterious cold start “Spook”.
(Lets call it the 3 start start)
Start 1 - Running rough, fouling spark plugs, die after 15 seconds.
Start 2 - Immediately after start 1, Runs better (On all cylinders), but die if you rev it a little bit.
Start 3 - Immediately after start 1 & 2, Starts an drive perfectly (One start)
In afternoon once it’s warmer outside it would start without issues.
Here is the DTC’s: (Always)
2764 – Secondary Air Pump (ECU from model that had one, this car does not)
278A – Ambient Temperature (Missing outside temp sensor?)
27EC – No CAN Message from EGS (ECU from Auto model, this car is manual)
DTC’s (Intermittent)
28D7 – Alternator Communication (Car charges fine, ?)
DTC’s (When Taking it for a hard drive) -ONLY
2715 - Oxygen-Sensor Heater Before Cat, Bank2
2714 – Oxygen-Sensor Heater After Cat, Bank2
2724 – Oxygen-Sensor After Cat, Bank2 – Signal
Have done the following:
X Replaced fuel Pump (3 different makes)
X Replaced fuel filter with regulator
X Replaced spark plugs with NGK (Seem to be the best the Fouling)
X Replaced CCV/Hoses
X Replaced Engine Temp Sensor
X Checked/cleaned VANOS solenoids
X Checked/replaced/swapped CAM, Crank sensors
X Disabled and set VVT step motor in LIMP home Model (NO difference in cold start behavior)
X Re-enabled VVTI and relearned stop ends
X Cleared adaptations
Can Oxygen Sensor(S) cause car NOT to start in cold? or
could it maybe be gremlin in ECU? or
Maybe leaking injectors?
