Decision made.

Dropped the car off at BMW today to have the Bearings replaced.

I will keep everyone updated on the job.

The car is at Auto Atlantic in Cape Town, the guys there are very friendly and happy to help.

Parts Cost: R7900 with the Oil

Labour Cost:R9000

Better than a engine rebuild

What did they quote for labour?

Yes +- R9000 for labour

Sorry, was viewing on my phone and didn’t see it.

Thanks for posting!

Well done on this route. Let us know what the final pricing will be at the time of invoice.

Must say this pricing seems nearly too good to be true, my car's engine is at around the 60-65k mark, will likely be doing this in a year or so's time.

Hi All

Went passed the dealership today to have a look at the bearings. They didn't look to bad for 171 000km.

please let me know what you think.

Shew, the brass was beginning to show on number 1 and 2...looks like you caught it just in the nick of time.

Looks like good timing indeed. Nothing like peace of mind having them done, and great pricing from the dealership too!

Bearings look very good for 171k km!
I suspect they may have been changed before?
Do you know the ownership history and driving style of the previous owners?

I highly doubt they have been changed before.

It is of course possible for S54 rod bearings to make it to 171000km, it is merely risky to allow them to do so. :)

I am the third owner of the vehicle, the bearings have not been done before.

Most of the mileage on the vehicle is from long distance driving.

The oil was changed every 2 years for the last 7 years, but now under my ownership that will change.

The actual invoice will be a little more because I’m doing a coolant flush, gearbox oil flush + new prop shaft coupling, diff oil flush and side shaft seal.

Yes that’s right, I was lucky and they didn’t find pieces of chain guide in the sump.
