Z3 Roadster Fuel smell

My wife's 2000 Z3 2.8 smell really bad like fuel every time I fill up the tank. I filled up once again today due to the price hike, and there it is again. I crawled underneath the car and found the bottom of the tank closest to the middle of the vehicle wet with fuel. Can it be a leak at the rubber where the pump goes into the tank, I think it is situated right above where the tank is wet. Any suggestions?

Look for cracks in the plastic of the fuel pump/sender unit where it fits into the tank, its a common problem on E36 models.

Don't know if it uses the E36 fuel level sensor but i have a brand new one in the box which i want to sell if you are interested. Otherwise, my advice is get yourself some Q-bond and koeksoda and clean the plastic around the pipes and seal the plastic with the Q-bond and koeksoda. Be liberal with the koeksoda and dose it with the Q-bond. Worked for me hence the fuel level sensor that is for sale!

Thanks guys. I will take out the sender this weekend... I guess I will have to hotwire the pump to run permanently in order to empty the tank..... Will updare when I have news.
