X5M and X6M are more than impressive

Hi, I'm a newbie but used to be quite involved with the BMW Car Club, thought I would check the forum out.

I spent a day at Kyalami this week driving M products and their competitors back to back, including the new M SAV's. I must confess I have been nothing but cynical about both cars but some time on the track revealed that the lads at M still know what they are doing. Having driven the X6 50i which was impressive enough, the X5M and X6M do have that unique 'M-ness' which separates an M car from the rest of the range.

Admittedly, the M3 and M6 were the two cars I kept on wanting to drive more and more as they are far purer than a 2.3 ton bundu basher, but we drove the ML63 around as well and M has it licked, and licking its wounds.

The power delivery is instant, traction mighty, it turns in like any planted sports car, has the balance of any other M product and what they have done with an automatic gearbox has to be experienced. The only criticsm I have left is there is no typical M exhaust note to speak of. It may be loud but the tone is more akin to 4-pot turbo than a twin turbo V8.

My general comment after all is said and driven into the ground; you can have your moms taxi cake and still eat it at the track. Still, I would rather have anything else from M for one small but important reason. This car had me smiling after driving it but every other M I have ever driven had me giggling. 'nuff said...

We tested an X5-M over the weekend - it ran a 12.71 over the 400m.
Very impressive for a 2.3 ton heffalump.

Test drove the X5M and it felt faster than my M3... Probably because of the bi-turbo...:pimp:

The X6 M gives an E60 M5 carrots up to 150, but then the M5 takes over. You must remember the X6 M has got the aerodynamics of a block of flats.

I got schooled in my 335 vs a X6 M up until 140. It sounded like it had a after market exhaust but I was highly surprised how it ran.
