Both my remote keys locking and unlocking stopped working, just out of the blue. Anybody had the the same problem? How do I fix it? By the way 2006 3.0d E53.

something tells me its not the remote, what is the odds that both will stop working at the same time. :fencelook:

Maybe its just a fuse or relay.

Reprogram them, if that doesn't help then probably the unit in your ignition aren't charging them.

Reprogramming costs nothing, so go that route first.

1. With both keys, get in the car and close all windows and doors.

2. Put key 1 into the ignition and turn to position 1 (the accessories should turn on)

3. Turn the key back to position 0 and take the key out of the ignition.

4. Using the key 1, hold down the unlock button, press the BMW logo (lock button) 3 times, and release the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock.

5. With the second key 2, hold down the unlock button and press the BMW logo (lock button) 3 times and let go of the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock and you're done!!

Alternate Procedure:

1. Switch ignition on and off within 5 seconds, with all doors closed.

2. Take key out of ignition and press unlock button. Hold unlock button whilst pressing the lock button 3 times, all within 10 seconds.

3. Release unlock button.

4. The system recognizes re-programming by locking and immediately unlocking the doors.

5. You have to do your other keys within 30 seconds after reprogramming your first key by following steps 2,3 & 4 only.

Ecco, was your problem solved? I tried the above but didn't work for me. saw it on YouTube as well and they recon it works out fine. My e46 key isn't working since weekend. car runs ok though.

This is very late but it is the batteries in the key, a guy here in Pretoria changed mine

where in Pta did you get batt? I once read ChefDj's post about different batts. we have to use the one with pre-soldered contacts. will try digging for the post again.

Just a question on this as I have one key that has this problem on my e46. Went to stealers and they told me that the key is caput and would need to order new keys etc at R2500.00!!! They say the key can not be opened to change the battery and it charges off the ignition. This is still the key key bear in mind and not the "block" without a metal shaft section. Which are yours? 2006 could be either.

It's possibly the receiver...?
Not too sure.

If your diamond key is losing it, DO NOT replace the battery. I had to have two new keys made (as I didn't have a spare) and it cost me R3600.00 from a reliable guy who comes to your house with a van, cuts the keys there, programs them for you, etc.

Highly doubt it's the battery, with the 318 there was a problem that the key buttons didn't work and sometimes worked when banging it. Ordered a new key from ebay, opened the key up to see what the problem was and noticed one of the terminals came loose (soldering on terminal). Re-soldered and worked like a charm.
