had to go upcountry the past week and decided to take the X5 diesel as it has not been out of the stable on a long trip for ages. Did about 2k km in three days and really enjoyed it. Had lots of rain and wind and even had a set of wheels coming for me that came off the lorry that was driving in front of me. I was just about to go up the VanRhynsdorp pass when the lorries wheels came off and came down the road. Fortuanately had time to react, slow down and swerve to miss them and chased after the lorry to tell the driver. He did not even notice anything amiss - lorry was empty at the time.
Anyway, kept to the speed limit and got 11km/litre average.
I really am surprised at the ease with which this car flattens hills and mountains. I use the speed control all the time and it does not deviate from the speed one iota. It sticks to the chosen speed like glue and will accelerate uphill if necessary. It is one of the nicer long distance vehicles that i have had/driven (have owned about 90 cars/bakkies in my life so far). I can really recommend the diesel X5 to anyone and even as a daily driver it is very nice. Have not had any major problems with it since i got it 18 months and 25k km ago. Recently swopped the rear boxes for straight throughs and it seems as if the cats were removed long time ago by one of the previous owners. Only other mod is EGR delete (it is a 2003 pre facelift and no swirlies) It has on 228k km at the moment, with auto gearbox replaced at 140k km. Turbo still going strong.
