Hallo All

Jumped in and bought a X5 M Yesterday.
I has a few small issues and may be one big that need sorting.

The radio seems to be working but there are not any sound.
The sunroof ,opened it once , only the right side lifted up ( the front big section ), now it does not want to close.

Lastly when we took a test drive, mechanically all were good, checked for smoke and all were good.
The trip back home was about 130 km, about 15 km from home, i picked up that there are smoke, and it is oil. It appears only after a long idle. on upshifts/downshifts/ hard acceleration, there is no smoke, what could this be ?

what year e70 is it, cause there was an update on all x63 engines in either 2012 or 2013 which fixed a bunch of issues also check heatshields around turbo's and turbo's themselves regardless of year.

The smoke after a long idle is typically from worn valve stem seals. N62/N63/S63 engines all have this problem when mileage gets to 150k km or so, sometimes even earlier.

Your 2010 car will have the first generation S63 engine.

this is the 2010, thanks.
Replace the heatshields of the turbos ASAP and check the exhaust manifolds heatshields aswell and just take a look at your turbos to be safe ,yes valvestem seals are the cause of your smoke

Thanks for the advice, tried looking up with what you mentioned about the heatshields, could not find anything. So what is the reason by replacing the heatshields ?

The turbos can overheat thanks to the heat from the engine as they are mounted in the v of the engine, then I asked a bmw specialist about it and he said that replacing the heat shields every few years can stop this
this video also has more info on both the n63 and s63, also details a few other issues.

So my smoking issue is solved, both turbo shafts had play, took them to Gaby for core replacement. Heat shields i cant see why they need to be replaced so I did not. The intake pipe rubber seals were very bad. replaced them too. All good now, thanks for the advice.

Just to add to this, another smoking problem you can come across with the S63 is the gasket on the inside of the turbo, I'm just putting this out there in case you do get more smoke coming from the top of the engine. I had this issue with my '12 M5, but took me ages to discover it because I didn't think it was coming from there. Anyway, on the diagram, part number 17, they're round rubber gaskets that go on where the air duct connects to the turbo, see the image below that one, part number 7 (air channel). Those gaskets shrink and don't seal properly because they're rubber and then the oil burns out through them. If you're in there again maybe just as preventative maintenance (if it hasn't been done already), the gaskets are cheap.

Thanks bugger, yes those are found on the TU engines. Mine that was needed are a bit bigger. Those rubber might have been part of the caise of my turbo failure because it was sucking air from the engine bay too. On the blades you could see the "sandblasting" if i can call ot that. Those rubbers were 1200 a pop.
