x5 engine on e46

hello guys
so my engine on my e46 2004 have no compresion
and it is cheaper if i will change the engine
i found an engine in very good condition from an x5 from 2004 , i know the engine is not exactly the same
the owner of the x5 is telling me i cant put it on my e46
i need some confirmation if i can do this

Maybe add a bit more information.

Are both engines M54 engines or are they different engines altogether?

If both are M54, you can make it work by re-using some of the stuff from your current engine. If they completely different...then you will need a lot more than just the engine.

So impossible to tell without more details.

If the engine from the x5 is a 3000cc M54 petrol you can install it.
If your car has a 6 cylinder engine you can install it.
