X5 E70 exhaust burning black

Hey Guys, have been wondering about the condition of my exhaust pipes. There has always been a bit of soot and burns black. My colleague has the similar X5 3.0d but his are cleaner and sort of light brown with no soot.
Had diagnostics and was told that the fuel preheater has a fault. Would this cause the black at the exhaust or is it normal.
Is it anything to worry about?
The preheater that fits onto the diesel filter has been like that since I bought the vehicle more than 2 years ago and costs about R3500 to replace.

Should I replace it or is it not a major issue?

Any advise welcome.

Have you had a chance to take it for someone to connect a diagnostic computer to it?

Have a look to see what is the mixture adjustment doing. That would be how much each injector is fueling to keep the engine running smooth. One injector might be overfueling.

Your fuel pressure regulator might be misbehaving, which you would see once you run diagnostics.

I have done diagnostics but probably not deep enough to get to the level of fuel and the injectors. Was just told that the fuel preheater had a fault so was looking to replace it but want to make sure it is that and not something else in the same circuit.
