I think the X3 will have the same if not similar costs to run or maintain, your saving is on the price. The X3 and X5 size wise have hardly anything between them.
@OP After owning an SUV for a year, I can't see myself driving anything else as a weekend car or daily. My X3 is not the most comfortable on gravel road thanks to the 20" wheels, but its damn confident. X-Drive ftwinned, even in rainy weather, its fantastic.

+1 on the X3 3.0d...Its the Albany best of both in this scenario, plus these seem to hold a decent resale.
Bmw Sedans are just for the asphalt, even those block paving roads are a bit too rough (when you combine Msport + 18s + Runflats).
Maintenance on the X5 will be steep, tyres alone will cost a packet.
Anyway, not sure why no one has asked whats your budget...this may help with better recommendations:thumbs:
My budget is R250K. And from my research on the net this is my findings within my budget :
F30 320d 4 to 5 yrs old with +- 130k km
F30 320i 3 to 4yrs old with less than 100 km
F25 X3 20d 4 to 5 yrs old with +- 150k km
F70 X5 30d 5 to 6 yrs old with +- 150k km
With regards to regular maintenence, it shouldn't be problem, I know my way around cars.
Please advise

How about an X1 non M sport. The ride on on M will be better, on and off the road IMO. Its pretty spacious.

I suppose it depends but the rear tyres on an x5 msport with the 20" diamond cut are 315 width. They're about R6500 each. Running costs would be the same but things like rear air suspension if fails would cost more to fix and I would imagine other suspension components to be more expensive than an x3.
