I would like to know when to start worrying about this engine and mileage?

how long can/do they last generally? off motorplan obviously

Injectors could need replacement from 100k km, the odd diesel pump or turbo could also require replacement from there. The prefacelift has a 6sp ZF gearbox which can go anything from 100k km.

All of the above purely depends on how it is looked after. My original turbo was still fine at 415 000kms and I had I reconned as I was going to push the car.

The zf boxes should not go at 100 000kms. maybe the extra strain of hauling the x5 around wears them out quicker but a fluid change should be done at 100 000kms ideally at 80 000kms

dont quite agree, these injectors are not old school pressure activated injectors that have to be retipped every so often, they last quite long if looked after .
my 330d's injectors are on 300k , and many others are too..
the 3litre's turbo is also far far more robust than the 2litre engine's turbo's because its a physical bigger unit and does not reach the rotational speed of the small turbo's..

I find it odd that people are surprised to hear of diesel motors having such high mileage on.

I've seen multiple diesel engines (trucks) with well over a million km on. The one has 1.9 million km on, which is the highest I've seen.
