As the topic states...the wife is on my case about getting a X5 but i have no knowledge about these beauties:flyfun:
So the big Q is..which one is better bearing in mind that i love power and got a bit of a heavy foot.
What is the consumption like on the 4.8 and will it make a difference if one should do software upgrade on the 3.0 diesel.
Any info will be greatly appreciated
Also found this on gumtree...what do u guys think?

Comparing with your 330...how would you rate the 4.4L after you drove it?

That sir, in my opinion, is not an ordinary X5. It's the big daddy ///M equivalent of the E53 range.

I'd take a 3.0d over a normal 4.4. However, the 4.8is is something special altogether :inlove:

I know:joy: but i know so little about them and would like to know what they're are like on maintenance and fuel consumption ...
obviously the diesel is the clear winner where the fuel is concerned but lacks the looks and power of the 4.8is... I'm use to 12.8L/100km...so how does the 4.8is compare?

I have currently both:

BMW E70 Hamann 4.8i between 16.8 and 21.2 l/100km

BMW E70 xDrive 3.0d DPF off and mapped between 9.7 and 12.5 l/100km

Hmmm..16-21l/100km :argh:
Guess i'll be looking at the diesels then:thumbs:
Now one more Q....can i do software on a diesel and will it be worth it just to get some xtra oomph:rollsmile:

Simple answer: YES

DPF off, remapping and rear silencer mod and you'll be amazed!

Wasn't there an autobox issue with the X5's that reared its head around 100 - 150k km? Not sure, just heard this from a bmw mech.

OK, I have a 2004 X5 4,4 with 130,000 K's on the clock. It's only been serviced a few times and average cost per service is R2300-00
It is pure Xmas and is fantastic to drive. And in soft sand, off-road it's wonderful. My only confusion area is consumption. The OBC tells me it's averaging 14,6 L/100 Kms. But when I keep track of fuel usage and mileage on a spreadsheet it works out to averaging 23,5 L/100 Kms. And the missus is complaining that our fuel bill has gone up dramatically.
So, from a performance and maintenance point of view I would say that the V8's are the best thing to cross your path. From a consumption point of view it's probably the worst thing to cross your path. Then again I suppose common sense will tell you that 3 ltr. diesel is going to be much more economical, consumption wise, than any V8 or even petrol straight 6. But performance is going to be a long way down as well as you can't expect a 3 ltr engine to produce the same as a V8. Then again, what is a turbo charger going to cost if and when it goes wrong? And I hear that our poor quality diesel causes many maintenance problems for the diesel folks out there. Maybe do some internet research and see what comes up.
Certainly, you have to test drive each to try and make the decision that is right for you. I'm biased, I don't like diesels. Not the sound or the smell.
Good hunting.

Good points, but I disagree on the above. Throw in a turbo or 2 (depending on which X5 diesel you have) and things change substantially. Yes the V8 has a glorious soundtrack, but mid-range punch on the 3.0d is pretty decent. At altitude and with a chip, a E53 3.0d will have better tractability than a E53 4.4.

My long-term average fuel consumption on a 2007 4.8i is 15.4 l/100km.

I just wish the tank was bigger, I get around 500km per tank before getting too nervous to drive much further.

Thank you guys:thumbs: Alot of good info here and i think i made my mind up..
Looks like i'll be heading the Diesel way then cause the fuel consumption looks a bit scary:cry: even though my heart is telling me 4.8 my head is telling me diesel.
Guess i'll take Promotec's advise and do software when i find a nice diesel:thumbs:

@Yulesen...which year models are you talking about buddy?

At a push you might get a clean facelift E53 3.0d around R170k-R200k. IIRC, the facelift was around 2004. The engine was upgraded from the previous 135kw/410nm to 150kw/500nm ones (if I remember the figures correctly). Lots of other small upgrades made the facelift worthwhile. Suspension was completely redone too with the introduction of x-drive.

The only downside was that rear air suspension was also introduced, which can get expensive if it breaks. However, have not heard too many complaints thus far - maybe other owners can shed light on this.

No complaints at all
The Hamann has air suspension and even with lowering kit it does work 100%

I have recently bought a 2005 X5 3.0D. I did a bunch of test drives and was really looking for the best example i could find and ended up paying 240,000. The diesel is punchy (cannot compare to a petrol though). One that I drove had obviously been chipped as it pulled like a train... I had to be careful not to spin wheels and my neck was frequently lagging behing the car by several inches. I am a diesel fan when it comes to lugging around big bodies and loads.

Now I was not looking for a petrol but inevitably searched did turn them up and the 4.8i are alot cheaper than equivalent diesels (and higher spec)(or atleast i got that impression). Do the math... at 25000km/year you will be realistically spending about R14000 a year extra in fuel costs. Pick a 4.8i up for 45000 cheaper than a diesel and you break even over 3 years. And have a beast of an X5.

So 2006 X5 3.0d R275,000 2006 X5 4.8i R180,000... that is a lot of petrol
