X5 and X6 M

Are these vehicles capable at all of going off road, even if it's just over some sand dunes?

I'm sure whoever owns these cars wouldn't dream of taking them off road, but I'm sure there're a few that would. How would they fair?

And (normal???) X5 and X6 owners feel free to comment as well.

Had the previous shape X5 and did not bother taking it offroad. Lack of low range puts it almost in the "softroader" category. A mate of mine who is a bit more into this stuff, says that you need lots of experience to take these cars offroad - they will go, but not ideal. One of the reasons I changed to the Landy too.

Ive heard that they arent very good at all for offroading, i even remember an episode of Topgear where jeremy couldnt even get it up a grass slope

lol that grass slope was classic. they just suck asss offroad unfortunately

I can say that normal dirt roads and a little mud are no problem. I think it's perfect out on the farm, but not too sure about real offroad. So far I am happy with my X5 getting full of dust and mus, but not too sure I would want to take it into a real offroad situation.

The BMW X series 4x4 drive was designed for Europe and USA winter conditions snow rain etc and if you have not driven a X in those conditions believe me they are very good especially with the winter tyre set up - so boys stick to the bakkie and discovery 4x4 to go rock climbing or bundu bashing !.

You'll be surprised how well an X5 does off road.
Go to you-tube or just google "X5 offroad abilty" It'll take you to a youtube video of BMW's offroad driving school in Namibia and have a look at how much you can do with an X5. No, it wont compete with a jeep, Land rover, etc, etc but, it'll do a lot more than most of us anticipate.

I live in Walvis Bay and they often bring the x5's here for drivers training for Bmw clients,driven one myself not in the dunes but along the beach.

The main thing and i am not an expert but tyres and ground clearance is the main issues , better tyres suited more for sand driving (higher side wall) will help a great deal not much one can do about the clearance but the do drive these car hard here......and they go everywhere but take a beating and having knowledge driving in dunes is the big thing here if you dont know how to , any car will struggle.
