X3 Old spec lights to LED tail lights

I bought a set of the new spec 2008 LED tails with the thought of replacing my old spec 2005 tail lights on a E82 X3.
Took it to an Auto electrician and he said it won't be possible as my X3 does not support LED's and the light on the dash will be on as the LED's draw less current the normal conventional bulb.

Is there any way I will be able to fit these new LED tails?
Is there a modular etc that can be used?

Do not know if this info will help ,fitted 12 v led indicators and tail light on my Superbike we added a resistor in series with the 12v supply to the tail light unit in oder to increase the resitor value as led lights have a lower resistance value than normal 40/55 watt tail lamps and indicators all worked fine .

LED's you should be able to get at communica or RS (or possibly electronics 123)
