Hi, will put some thoughts together tomorrow

AceRally sent me a PM about a month ago with regards to my thoughts on the M50d. Below is what I sent him at the time.

Morning, yes, I had a 2014 F15 M50d. Up till then that was the best car I've owned by a long shot! I got it with 42000km till 88000km. Traded it in on an X3 a few months ago. In the almost 3 years I had it it did not give a day's problems apart from a failed rear air suspension airbag which was replaced under motorplan at a cost of around R20k if I remember correctly. So apart from that it was just normal services. The car averaged around 11l/100km over the 3 years. It can go as low as around 7l/100km on the open road if you stick to the speed limit, but to be honest, in this car sticking to speed limits is almost impossible, one just wants to floor it and feel that torque and shove at every opportunity one gets. Overtaking is such a pleasure in this car, no matter what speed, just floor it and it pushes you back and it goes, it really is impressive for such a big car! I never got tired or used to the power over the 3 years, it is just always there and it always impresses! A few Decembers ago I put my GS1200 bike on a trailer (BIG, heavy trailer that can take 3 bikes) and towed the bike to Mosselbay from Cape Town. What a pleasure, did not even notice the extra weight, overtaking was still very brisk and it pulled almost similar than without the trailer, it was an eye-opener to see how this car pulled this heavy trailer.

I often changes cars and normally get an itch to change after about a year, but with this car I never had that itch, I only changed now because I had to spend a few rand on the car (change tyres, upcoming service etc.) and that triggered me into looking at a replacement. Plus I got a very good trade-in at BMW.

I still miss my X5, and my wife misses it even more, she loved it. But my replacement M40i X3 now puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it. Anyway, below a summary of Pro's and Cons:

Pro's:

- Looks, road presence etc. To this day I think the F15 X5 in M-sport is a very good looking car, it has dated really well
- Tech (for the year model)
- Pan roof
- Power and torque, especially in Sport+
- Gearbox, excellent excellent excellent!
- Adaptive LED lights, best lights on any car I've had apart from my current X3
- Economy for the power you get
- Harman Kardon sound system was really good once I fiddled a bit with the equalizer
- Handling was very good for such a big car and the ride quality was very impressive with the adaptive suspension!
- Comfort access is really nice, will always spec this going forward
- Loved the shear size and space of this car, it just gobbles up everything you put in it
- Quality feel to the interior and switches, even compared to my 2020 X3, some of the switch gear in my 2014 feels much more luxurious and superior. The manual gear changes feels much more "expensive" and soft touch in the X5 than my X3, the same goes for the steering wheel buttons and stalks. In the X5 it just feels softer and more dampened, which I miss.
- Gas strut for boot floor shelve, never thought much about it, but now that I have the X3 and it does not have this gas strut to keep the shelve open I really miss it!
- Electric tow bar
- I-drive was really good, not compared to the latest I-drives, but for the year model it is very good.

Cons:

- Some wind noise around the mirrors in strong cross winds
- Aircon sometimes struggled to come when the car was parked in the sun in hot days, takes a while to cool down the cabin.
- Tyres will be expensive, would have cost me around R24k to replace. My car had a spare, so I would most probably have gone the non-RFT route if I had to replace, that would have cost half the price of the RFT's
- Some minor "creaks" in the interior if the body twists (going over speed bumps for instance), nothing major, just out of place in the class. Overall the car is very well put together without any rattles apart from these odd creaks every no and again.
- Not much else, I'm really nitpicking to put together the cons!

If you can get one, don't hesitate, believe me, this is an awesome vehicle, I would love to still have one, but it was time to move on. Would have loved to replace it with the latest X5's (G05), but they are just ridiculously priced at the moment, hence going the X3 route.
