So over the vac the we did the run to Durban. Fuel consumption was 8.3l /100km for two way journey

That was good I thought

No really, on a long drive like that, you should be seeing lower figures in the sub 6l area.

How many kilos on the clock, tyre inflation and last service/ oil change and speed/ driving style all affect consumption.

provide a bit more detail and guys will tell you if the consumption is on par.

Fully loaded, 98k on clock, last service some two months ago, speed around 140km/h, tyres at 2.6.

Remember this is for a 3 litre.

my dad drives a 2005 330d, with i think the same engine thats in the E83 (stand to be corrected here) and gets 6.5 - 7 on urban driving. granted the body on an X3 is heavier, but that should be accounted for on long runs by reducing start-stop fuel consumption.

I notice that on my diesel, i get the best consumption at between 100 and 120. over that and it seems to become heavier. not sure why that is, probably has something to do with the amount of force required to propel the car at that speed and fuel economy being affected by wind resistance.

Id say that sounds about right, its a x3 after all and its a 3L Turbo.

If its an auto I say its perfect. This isnt a 320d.

In my Auto 330d In town driving all sorts of driving styles its sitting on 8L/100 but its an auto and its lighter than your car and its town driving. But I have seen my fuel consumption go into the high 9's before, and if you check on that fuelly app and compare your results you will see that most auto 330d's (E46) are 8 - 8.6L/100.

But like I have said before, its very easy to trick the cars ecu into giving you a very low reading and very easy to get it to show you an extreamly high figure, I think its a load of crap, just read how many Km's you get out of a tank and work out the actual reading from there. you can use fuelly to get an accurate result.

The X3 3.0d is an auto.

I must say that I was fairly pleased with the consumption. Given that we were loaded, had some serious stop goes coupled with my heavy foot at times.

now my 120d manual transmission gives me 6.6 on average.

These figures are done manually, using calculator etc.

That depends on whether the trip meter was reset during the running in Durban or not. If it wasnt that the consumption is for the long distance as well as the short runs in and arond durban i thinks its good.

@Darkstarx3 That sounds like good figure to me, especially considering the eight and the vehicle.

Na did not reset the trip meter in Durban. Did the manual stuff to work out consumption.

I agree, the kms included the running around in Durban as well as the long trips.

Must say that I was both surprised and pleased with the overall consumption. My previous car was Subaru Forester Turbo. Now that sucked petrol. Got like 12l/100km on that on similar trips

Also, apart from weight, 4WD uses a bit more than RWD, so that consumption is actually decent

Got 8,8l/100 overall with my E53 X5 3l diesel 2003 auto non facelift fully loaded from Hermanus via Aliwal North/Pretoria to the Kruger Park and back sticking strictly to the speed limit. Am very happy with the consumption of that car. Has now got 230k km on the clock.
