X3 2L Diesel - Jerking when accelerating

Hi, hope someone can give me some advice. I have a 2007 X3 2l Diesel X-Drive Manual. When accelerating from start the vehicle often has a jerk in its gears, almost like a cut-out or a "flat spot". There is no Error on my Engine diagnostics. I've approached two workshops with both indicating that they cant pick up any errors from the vehicles computer. I am frustrated. Can anyone plase let me know if they have had similar problems.

Exactly when in gear does this happen? Is it for all the gears or only 1st and 2nd?

Just remember that this could also be lag before the turbo hits in. But it will be a bit better if there's a bit more information.

it happens in most gears; 1 - 4. I guess when the vehicle is under drag from stand still. It also does in from any rpm - 1000 and up to even high 3000 rpm's. It happens when you excellerate hard (full throttle) or even when your "medium" throttle.

Mmm ok... thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, this hasn't happened to my diesel car yet. So I did a little research and seems to find a website that may relate to your problem.

:thumbs: I had a similar problem after I lent my car (A4 Tdi) to my father in law - and after running her with new fuel and Diesel cleaner it cleared up the issue now no more jerking around. (also did it in all gears)

so I think it could be fuel - Dirty, try run the tank dry and top up fresh from another dealer.

I had exactly the same problem with my 07 X3 2.0 d, had like a misfire in !st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th but 5th and 6th were fine. This carried on for about 4 months..... it turned out to be my transfer box, trying to engage... have you had the triad of lights yet?

I've had a similar issue with a 07 X3 2.0d. It use to feel as though it's bogging down on take off. Had the steering angle sensor replaced which sorted it out.
It did take a few months for it to show up on the code reader though, and bmw only replaced it once it read a fault.

Thanks for the advice. On the one hand i suspect its a fuel problem and on the other hand i fear it to be the transfer box as that is what my suspicion is. I'm taking it to a Diesel specialist but not sure if i should rather take the car to a BMW specialist. A bit shy for the dealers as they can charge you an arm and a leg.

There is a quick way to check if it's the transfer box, pull the one big plug off the transfer box(there are two plugs,small one is a resistor) under the vehicle, then take it for a drive up the road, if the "misfire" has gone you will know.:thumbs:

So R5k later after leaving it at a Bosch diesel electric speacialist who performed all sorts of tests on my injectors, feul filter etc, i was told that they dont really know what to do anymore. So being very irate i fetched the car and followed your advice and hey, presto, the problem is gone. So question, can i continue to drive the car like this for now. Secondly, can anyone refer me to someone inexpensive but reliable to repair/replace my transfer box in Cape Town. Have any of you heard of Garage 808 in Bellville? Appreciate your advice. Thanks

Well I drove mine for about 8000k's before I took the xfer box out to check it. The only disadvantage is you have no 4x4 but all else works ok (abs etc) If I lived in CT I'd gladly give you a hand but I'm in Jhb. I've got to the stage that I don't trust anyone working on my cars anymore, (every time I do they come back worse than when I sent them in, with a BIG BILL !! ) so I do it all myself now.If there is any other way I can help give me a shout.

Will pulling the plug help for me to ? have an extended warranty specifically because I know the X3 has transfer case problems so how do I go about getting then to replacing it if it doesn’t show any errors on the bmw computer ?

All X3 are 4-wheel drive, X-drive or not.

X-drive was from the 2009 onward models if I remember correctly. Engine outputs were increased and the 4-wheel drive case changed a bit

The xdrive system is able to regulate torque rather than have it fixed to the axles.
Pre-xdrive models are set at a split of 40:60, whereas xdrive can push 100% to either axle.
