The 2.0d is very reliable if maintained well.
I picked up my F25 2011 2.0d auto with the ZF 8 last week after a very long search for one in my price range. Will do a write up on it and all the maintenance / service.
Avg fuel consumption is around 6.9 L per 100 kms

Hi there. Depends on your needs. Are you driving short distances in traffic or long distances on the highways? Do you carry a heavy or light load? How long do you intend keeping the car for? Are you looking for a daily hard working car or an occasional use car? Etc..
Freeway driving on week days, sitting in traffic mostly, total of 60 to 70km per day. Light load.
Want to keep the car min 5 years.
It will be a daily driver

I might be biased as i have a 2012 X3 20D, but that would be my choice no doubt.

Firstly resale value - seems the X3 35's go for way less than a 20D of the same year and mileage and spec.
When it comes to sell in 5 years time, you will find way more buyers and better offers for the 20D.
If you go browse Autotrader you will see examples.

Maintenance wise, the n54 has its common issues to be looked at, that you don't have with the 20D.

The gents on here saying the 20D isn't that economical in very short and stop and go stops, if you think between 9 and 10L/100km is bad, what do you think the 35i will be like in the same condition's lol.

Yes the 35i is amazing performance wise and that sound is to die for, just watch the vids of Anees 35i and you will be seduced. If you dont worry about consumption and have an unlimited fuel budget than the 35i will be a blast.

A stock 20D is a tad under powered, but after a remap, it totally transforms the vehicle. I thought the acceleration up to 100km/h would mostly improve but to my surprise the highway performance improved even more. acceleration from over 120km/h was way better than i expected. Its just an effortless drive having maximum torque rite from pull away revs. My consumption has never gone over 9.6l/100km and the best i have gotten is 6.2l/100km long distance and not even trying an econo drive.

My Advice would be for your budget by the cleanest 20D you can find (especially if you can get Harman kardon sound (the base sound system is terrible) Or if you patient get a 30D. It honestly is a perfect car. Worth a premium. It is a buttery smooth engine, boat loads of torque, sounds great, and just as efficient long distance as the 20D.

Regardless of the one you chose, keep us in the loop and create a shoowroom thread of your choice, so we can see the nice new beast. Good luck with your search.

I have a 2014 X3 2.0d with N47 engine D20C revision. car has 205,000km. Fuel economy average 7.5L/100km no timing chain rattles or noices from the engine or car. No real issues to mention. Car been amazingly faithful with no problems. At 200,000 i decided to change the glow plugs and snapped X2 of them. What a bugger to drill them out. Advice would be every time you do an oil change it cost nothing to unscrew the glow plugs and put a bit of Hi temperature copper grease on the thread. That way they don't snap because they are siezed. Decided to remove the intake as well for cleaning believing it would be carboned up. Not a stitch of carbon. The valves and intake manifold looked like they just came of the showroom floor. Couldn't believe it. I'm keeping this car for much longer. Fun car to drive, stable and pretty capable with that all X drive system. Just change all the oils and don't believe that lifetime oil nonsense. Cant speak for the other models but this 4 cylinder diesel hits the sweet spot in capability and performance, unless you want the earth to shake every time you pull away with a mighty roar. Then pick something faster.

If you're interested I'm selling a xDrive 30d exclusive that's being outstandingly maintained if I do say so myself. Only reason for selling is that the wife got tired of not having heated seats and wanted an upgrade šŸ˜‚.

My fuel economy is around 7.4l\100km mixed driving (always comfort, never eco), BUT I do not drive hard or fast. If you decide to really tap into the 3 litre diesel engine that will go up, no question.

Here's the ad, check it out.
