Hi Guys

Im curious - the pre facelift X1 20D (pre 2013's) i see they have the 130kw 350nm engines.

Am i correct in saying these are the e90 pre facelift engines, which means you have to worry about swirl flaps with them?

Where as the lci engine 135kw 380nm engine you do not?

Nope, the pre lci 20d engine is the M47, all 20d X1's have a detuned N47

Edit: you may find some 2012 prelci models with the 135kw version (could be mistaken here), and just note that the LCI has the ZF8 box

Ah that's good news.

Do you have one? How you finding it?
Fuel consumption good,drive, any issues?

I see late 2012 was the lci with the ZF8 box, but i see they juSt over 200k price wise

Just a word of warning, be careful of the 130kw version of the N47 engine.

This is the first revision and is known to have timing chain issues. I think the engine is similar to the x23d twin turbo version (N47S I think) , if you look at the forum a member recently had his timing chain go off which leads to essentially engine failure and possibly bent valves requiring a rebuild.

The safest bet is the 135kw version which I have read has revisions to avoid this issue.

yeah my Dad drives one...2011 model, its on 109k kms now...no major issues, the boost pipe cracked at around 35k kms, and at 102k kms the damper pulley started showings some cracks, had that replaced along with a new v-belt before it got worse. Other than regular services...thats about it in terms of maintenance.

Fuel is decent...dbn to jhb it did around 5.8-6.1 l/100 with a full boot and 4 passengers (AC was also used)...locally it does around 8.5l/100km (mainly cause my dad has a very short commute).

Drives similar to a 3er...just you sit higher up and have just a bit more road clearance:thumbs:

Ok cool, so basically its like owning a 320D lci.

They seem to be very good buys, if you need a bit of ground clearance.

With a map must be a real good all rounder

Thanks for the info

Mine has been running well since 2011 (N47).

I had to remove the swirlflaps...car drove much stronger and smoother after removing the flaps.

The first revision of the N47 are 2008 to late 2009 (easily spotted by the black/grey engine cover).

But to be safe, always do regular services with quality oils to hopefully prevent the "death rattle" :hammerhead:

Did a physical delete? does this help reduce the puff of smoke on a "kick down"?

Unfortunately I bought mine on 136k but started doing oils services every 10k with bmw oils so hopefully it keeps mine going, on 153k now

Yes i physically removed the flaps and shaft.

The occasional puff of smoke you see on accelleration is normal and part of the DPF regeneration.

Removing the DPF helps with reducing and eliminating the smoke but then you need to remap/tune the car.

I told my dad that the smoke is perfectly normal...but he is not having it:fencelook:

I also see most 20ds smoke even more after a remap:hammerhead:, prob too aggressive remapping was done.

Probably the aftermath of a Cupra that you just missed :fencelook:

Its a tractor afterall...we live with the smoke.
Excessive and constant smoking needs attention but on accelleration is normal.

They seem to be very good buys, if you need a bit of ground clearance.

Except the 320d lci had a zf 6, the gearbox was the main reason i went for LCI, the revised motor is very responsive with the 8spd gearbox. When i drove the 6spd with the older motor ( although it was in an X3) it felt much slower.

My wife drives the X1 and we have averaged 6.7 over 32k km, on a long trip to Durban saw 5.1 (speed limit plus 10%) , a trip to suncity was 4.8 (but i drove at 100km/h). Her day to day driving in Pta traffic is about 7.2-7.3.

Personally I prefer the headlight revision, the motor and gearbox on the LCI. At the same time, I feel BMW decided to do the absolute minimum in terms of a Facelift on the X1, maybe theres more but i couldn't find much else.

Agreed, I don't even get that on my normal 320d. Must have a light foot? :fencelook:
