Morning everyone, I am a newby on BMW. I always wanted a car with the 2l diesel motor. My opertunity is now here. I can get a 2018 BMW 2l diesel sdrive with 33000km on the clock. It is under motor plan until March 2025. Currently I am driving a bulletproof Honda Civic 2012 model. Is the BMW a good buy? One reeds all kind of nasty stuf on the internet, but so with any car you search. I would like to hear from you all.

Hi bud

Welcome to the forum.

Definitely a great car and with the nice low mileage and balance of plan, it is a no brainer to get it. It is a reliable, economical and powerful motor. It does have the Aisin gearbox and not the ZF 8 speed that comes in the other series but I think at this mileage and with plan you won't have any issues.

Please do the necessary checks anyway and ensure no paintwork or accidents etc.

Refer to this thread and email Coisman all the required info so he can do an enatis check for you: https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/threads/doing-enatis-checks-on-vehicles.85274/

Good luck and hope to see a showroom thread with the new car soon!

Hi thanks for the reply, I am buying from a BMW dealership so it should not be a problem. Will ask for a report on the vin number of the system. I have not test driven the car as yet, about 200km away from the dealership.

Bmw Diesel engines are bullet proof. Your cant go wrong.
If it is a S-Drive it will front wheel drive, and X-drive will be all wheel drive.
The S will be slightly lighter on consumption due to less weight.

But great cars. Try get a well specced one with at least led headlights, sunroof and Harman Kardon sound system.
The sliding/adjustable rear benches are awesome and they are surprisingly roomy in the rear, and also with boot space. You can adjust the rear seats to have either more boot space, or more leg room.

Buying from a BMW dealership does not mean you should not do your own checks as well bud. The used car market is scary at the moment so always better to do as much homework as possible before buying.

Thanks for the reply, buying second hand and on a budget one cant expect too much, so far this one has been the best priced/speced X1 available.

Almost seems cliche to suggest an X3 2.0d but I'm going to do so anyway. The ZF gearbox is better and Xdrive is a nice advantage in a SAV/SUV .

I was going to do this bud but it would be difficult to find an X3 with such low mileage and balance of plan for R399k which is what the X1 is marked at.

I would personally wait for a better specced car, especially at this price point.

This is a base spec, with the only actual optional extra i see being the spare wheel and jack sunroof and electric mirrors.

you will get more trade in value in the future if you at least find one with LED headlights rather than halogens.

At this point I would have liked it if the tail gate did not have the motorised shocks. More tech is usually more problems. Finding a propper car these days with nice power delivery with so few km and waranty is scares. Will drive through on Wednesday and make up my mind....

Hi Hansie, I read on other forums the road noise is bad on these models, is it that bad or just bad compared to BMW standards? They say replacing the run flats with normal tyres helps a lot.

I'd agree they are a bit on the noisy side but not a big issue for me personally. I think changing to normal tires would definitely help. However, I'm still on the runflats as my wife uses it primarily, and I prefer peace of mind.

The only way to tell if it will bother you is to take it on a test drive.

My 2 cents here.. yes the low mileage is appealing, but this should not be a deciding factor. These engines (when maintained correctly) are very reliable even out of motorplan.

This x1 is very low spec, and your resale value will be poor when it comes time to sell/trade.

Regarding the run flats, there is far more road noise and a harsher ride, although I can't comment on the x1 itself. Test drive will be a deciding factor if you can live with it. Take it on some uneven roads to make sure it's bearable.

Many people expect vehicles to be whisper wuiet and then blame runflats in an attempt to use that as an excuse to ditch the runflats for normal tyres...
Many of them have said have said RFTs are too expensive when they bought the car THEN apparently the RFTs become noisy too when time comes to change.
All of my BMWs have had RFTs, at the right pressure and maintenance of the tyres, it will be fine. The X models insulate quiet well... When it comes to this I would say purely a personal preference...you must test drive it over various road types in your test drive and gauge for yourself.
I have no regrets and never once opted for changing over of RFTs on any of my cars...they were all comfy, they were all smooth drives and I really attributed the road noise to many of our lovely Jhb surfaces.
I just followed normal guidelines around tyre and rim care and it has worked so far.
