WTF must I do now ? (Coisman please check here man)

OK, gonna keep this as simple as possible ...

some time ago I bought my E34 540i ... car was still licensed and on the road

The guy gave me a signed Change of ownership letter, he never gave me the registration certificate ! all I have at the moment is a very bad faxed copy of his ID.

I have the last license disc paper for the car with his details on it, (address, etc).

I phoned directory enquires he no longer has a number at his registered address.. also the cell number I had doesn't exist anymore. The guy now apparently lives in tanzania, or he might be back I don't know.

I need the duplicate certificate so that I can register the car, but the people at the traffic department are beyond help from any type of school, phsyciatrist, phsycologist, doctor or any other form of educated proffesional who helps people, they simply say they cannot help me and I must get that guy to come back from overseas to give me the document, even tho I have no way of contacting him or knowing where he is.

car is standing here all fixed up, and I need to sell it again now...

I've tried so many things .. but stuck in the mindless system at the moment.

what must I do ? Push it into a river ? I can't even sell it or scrap it since you need papers to do that.

I went through the same with my 540i, I didnt even have a letter from the previous owner. All I had was his name and the proof of payment from my account to his.

I went to the police station and did an affidavit saying that I had bought the car etc, and that I could now not get hold of the previous owner, I also put in there his previous address and contact numbers etc that I had tried. I then went to the traffic dept with this and they gave me a temp licence so that I could go to the traffic dept testing center and have the engine/body number verified on the car.
Everything was then sent to head office and they came back about 2 weeks later saying that I could pay the back due fees on the license and come collect my new reg papers in my name

You are pretty much screwed on this one. Never buy a car without papers, simple as that. Or take it off the road and make it a track car?

@freerider, I've had 3 different affidavit's from lyttleton saps, despatch saps, ermelo saps... traffic depertmant just laughs at me and says it means nothing...so Frustrating bro.

@zaleo, can't sell the engine, no one can ever register it again if I don't have the papers :/ which sucks.. I can get 35K for the car now.. much more than when I would part it out :/

The finance house probably has the registration certificate..... hope he did not ow money on the car..... Have you ever checked if its not maybe reported stolen?

bleh, I can make it a track car, but like I can't drive it to the track, will allways have to pull it on a trailer :/ .. this makes it a little inconvenient ...

would make a decent track car tho.

The E39 was launched in 1996/7 right, and they were issued with M60's for the first little bit. Maybe that other E39 540 with the poofy cam guides has an M60 in it... see where this is going...

As for the track car, is it not a bit heavy... ?

My folks have gone the affidavit route on a car they purchased and no issues. Provided you get police clearnace on teh chassis and engine you should be OK

@threetwoeight, yea I've checked if its stolen, everything checked out fine.. luckily.

@zaleonards, yea :/ but gonna buy that one in anycase if I can get rid of these in time. will be easy to fix it since we got the special tools here.

@Clownshoe, Freerider just mailed me a pretty good affidavit, I have tried this 3 times before but they just laughed me off, obviously not interested in helping even though they could.. I guess I was just there at the wrong time speaking to the wrong people. Will try this again now.
