I'm actually in the market for an e46 individual but I have ruled out the 318's besides the fact thats its slow :fencelook:
and i'm sure the 320i would be lighter on fuel?

No Sir I can Confirm in all driving conditions the 318i e46 is lighter on fuel than a e90 320i. And oil leaks and valve stem seals and vacuum pump problems are the same scenario for 320 and the 318 at so every 100 000km

Thanks for the headsup Iceman...Was always under the impression the E46 320i was much more reliable then the E46 318

I was comparing the E90 and e46
At home my Sister has my dads old 2001 e46 318i 210 000km
and my dad has a 2010 e90 320i with 76 000km and I have a 2013 F30 320d 30 000km.
Why you want to get rid of your e90 320d

The first being the M43 1.9lt 8valve motor (most reliable) but then it was replaced with BMW's most unreliable motor the N42 2.0lt 16valve and BMW had plenty issues with it and replaced it with the N46 2.0lt 16valve which is also found in the earlier E90 320i models.
M43 was the pre facelift 318i from 1999-2001.
N42 was the facelift 318i from 2001-late 2003.
N46 was the facelift 318i built late 2003-2004.
Stay well away from the N42 model, its the worst engine I have ever worked on and subsequently prefer to not work on them at all.
The E46 320i facelift with the M54B22 is a great car in comparison and far more reliable than its 4cyl counterpart.

Honestly, I think one of the better engines that BMW made - not massively powerful, but definitely powerful enough for everyday use, and apart from a few common minor issues that this engine family suffers from, they are quite robust engines!
My Wife's 320i of course has this engine, and is rapidly closing on the 200k km mark, and you would not think it! Engine is probably as sweet as it was the day it rolled off the production line.
