so there are a lot of great informative detailing threads happening, so it would be good to categorize them in some way. this thread can be renamed later as a general glass related thread.

what does a purpose made autoglass cleaner give you over windolene and newspaper?

I have the CG glass cleaner & it looks, smells and even works just like windolene. :fencelook:

I wouldnt use newspaper on the inside on my window though because it'll scratch the tint... the microfiber glass cloth from crazy detailer seems to work quite well

yah, I definately wouldnt use newspaper on the inside with tint, but you have to admit that on "raw" glass it works damn well.

Do yourself a favour, get a spray bottle and add a little bit of vinegar and then fill it up with water

This is the best you will ever use on glass

Just spray on and wipe with damp micro fibre cloth and have a dry cloth over ur shoulder in wait

As soon as you wipe it with the damp cloth, grab the dry cloth and wipe over where you have just cleaned and viola, the cleanest window ever

One thing I do find, besides Autoglym Fast Glass not leaving any streaks or ghosting is that it seems to leave a layer behind which helps water bead and repels water on the glass.

Otherwise, its just the ease of use with the Fast Glass - I love the stuff.

Great question Kabal

There are basically two reasons why household glass cleaners are not recommended for use on automotive windows. Firstly household cleaners have been known to contain ammonia. While this works great on mirrors and glass in the home, its not the greatest for car. Firstly, in the home you normally have open spaces which makes inhaling of the fumes a non issue, in the car esp. the interior it can be a bit of a concern. The other issue with ammonia is its negative impact on rubbers, vinyl and plastic. Not the stuff you want on your interior or exterior trim. This should be a greater concern if your windows are tinted.

Secondly, our vehicle glass is exposed to harsher conditions like bugs, exhaust fumes, oil, tar etc. So while household cleaners work on the glass at home, they can fall a bit short when used on your car. You will see this in the form of streaking, and the need for a bit more "elbow grease"

Personally I've tried a lot of tricks to get my glass sparkling. And I can say from experience, newspaper is a SCHLEP ! While it may clean, the problem with having fibres getting into every nook and cranny is a pain. You have to constantly use clean paper else it just disintegrates. Even then it requires a few passes to get into the "zone". Do yourself a favour, get a proper glass microfiber. Microfiber already works great on glass, but the problem with normal terry microfiber is you still get lint. That just drives me NUTS! Glass microfiber have a silky smooth finish and ZERO lint. This alone makes a HUGE difference.

I use Autolym Fast Glass and it works a treat for me. I hated doing windows as no matter how hard I tried, I always had streaking when I pulled out into the sun. With fast glass, its literally a tiny squirt, and wipe clean. ZERO streaks. Again less is more, so you probably use less than 10ml per wash. That roughly gives you about 50 washes. Breaking that down into rands and cents. R65 over 50 = R1.30 per wash OR R5.20 per MONTH. Hardly breaking the bank for that convenience. :inlove:

Again as I always say, if what you are using is working for YOU, then that all that matters

But if you have any of the issues that I've mentioned above, then give the Glass microfiber and Fast glass combo a try :=):

I have been using windowlene for long time now. I even put little bit of it in my window washer tank. I have not use anything else yet as did not need to.

And everytime you give your windscreen a good spray, some runs-off onto your paintwork removing your wax...

I just use the wash solution for the exterior of the car to was the outside then rinse and dry with a glass cloth, for the inside I wipe with a damp microfibre then dry with a glass cloth.

For many years I have been using Enchantrix organic window cleaner. This is a plant-based product with no petrochemicals, colourants, chemical fragrances or animal ingredients. (Read this off the back of the bottle)

You squirt a small amount of it on the glass and wash with a wet cloth. Then you polish with a dry cloth.

I think the cleaner reduces the surface tension of the water since it is very easy to dry the glass off afterwards. If the window is very dirty (from parking at the beach say) I will rinse it off first, then clean with Enchantrix

They have got a website with other organic household products, some very good, some indifferent. http://www.enchantrix.com
