Why you should not buy a new 316i

Except for the obvious this is why:

I went on car configurator on the BMW site and if you spec all the extras that is standard on a 320 and not on a 316 (like leather seats auto climate control ...) the price difference is only R 9000.

Absolute craziness!!!

+ tou will frustrate yourself with the lack of power if compared to the 320

The 316i is actually a really great car,
Maybe later on today if I can find the time I'll write up the review I've been promising

Ok did not know that - will make a huge difference from the sluggish E36 version

in 5 years time,my son will have his drivers licence,by that time there should be a couple good second hand ones around, perfect car for a first car.

leather, not really on the top of my list, and power would be ideal for a first time driver, safety is also important and that is what counts, his safety

Just traded in my wife's 320i (115kw) 2010 model. Got a demo with 2,000km's - auto, leather etc. Took it on a nice run in sport mode. The 8 speed gear box smooth and the turbo sounded fairly nice. The car handled nice on the road. And I hit the 100 mark in the 9sec it said. Now a comparison with the previous 320i.
1. The 316i certainly felt a lot nimbler and quicker.
2. The feeling through the steering felt lighter.
3. In comfort mode the car was a lot more easier on bumps and did not feel the sometimes back breaking jarring like on the older 320i.
4. Fuel consumption - my wife had the car at 8.2L per 100km. On the 320i this would range between 13L - 15L. On a drive out of town I had it at 6.7L. On a drive to Joburg the 320i gave me a very good 7.4 (at time at 130km/h).

I am happy I got this car!
