Why pretend

I fail to understand this, Why on earth do people pretend when the reality is so obvious. I fail to grasp this. Just yesterday I drove behind a E90 M3 that was emmiting diesel fumes and have a single exhaust.
Then today I saw a 5 series e39 that has a smoking engine and most propably a 525i sporting a M badge.
Do these drivers think they are fooling the public or does it satisfy their fantasies?
No pun intended if any users on this forum fit the bill :hammerhead:

I saw something similiar the other day, as I was driving up to a traffic light, what do I see standing there, [sarcasm]a Ferrari of all things[/sarcasm], but on closer inspection it turned out to be a VW fox decorated with ferrari badges.

This is actually a rather common (kommin) thing, VW's tazz'es etc with ferrari badges, who do they think they are fooling.

But the best one ever (only because it was so unique) was a 2002 Opel Corsa hatch with audi badges on the front and back, WTF

I actually saw the same kind of thing on a ford sierra/saphire (not sure), except he just cable tied a set of e36 kidney grilles to the front of his car. He also had the spoiler from the cosworth on so guess he is a double pretender. But what else can you do if you want to drive an e36 ford sierra cosworth, and that BWM/ford fusion you hoped for never happened.

A sad fact of our society. People are so brand aware that it is sad. I coach kids between the ages of 9 to 17 and even at 9 they want this brand and that brand. I have seen many parents do this. A kid that is 11 years old gets a R3k cricket bat because so and so bats with it, yet that R3k bat will last at most 4-6 months before he outgrows it or it is left in the rain. In fact it is so bad that GM use to sell Stickers but they stopped. Reason. People would buy cheap Kasmir willow bats and buy GM stickers and put that on the cheap bat. Most International players' bats get made in the same factory and then the sponsor slaps his sticker on it. A nother reason why todays bats have such thick edgers is that there is extra space for sponsers to plak stickers.
Cricket balls that carry a certain players signiture in print are on avg. R20-R30 more expensive than a ball from the same factory.
This has happend in Golf aswell. In fact Ernie was seen playing with a non sponserd set of clubs that were made for him to test. He liked them and his sponser just put on their stickers.

The world has just gone mad. Label Label Label. Yes there are some labels that is worth buying for the qualty of the product but that is getting few and far between. You are not paying for the quality anymore but rather for the name on the product.

I agree with you, but I also disagree with you.

Take clothes for example, I buy lots of "labelled" clothes and some non-labelled clothes. I have found that the more expensive clothes last a lot longer. I bought Mr price 3/4s at the same time as I bought some guess 3/4s (about 4 years ago), after about a month the Mr price pants had lot a button, the zip didnt work properly and the material was fraying, I still have the guess pants, nothing has gone wrong with them yet. So thats why labels mean something. You do pay for quality in most cases.

But give Chris Gayle a R500 cricket bat, and give me a R10k cricket bat, and I promise he will bat far better than I (until his bat breaks...). Yes most international cricket players bats are made in the same place, but that doesnt mean that the bats are crap quality because they are all similar, those bats are all being made to the standards that are required by international players. I can also promise you, Ernie's clubs that were unbranded were probably made by a top end golf club manufacturer, they werent made by maxed or anything.

Marketing is sadly what rules for companies, if "john smith" endorses our product, more people will buy it, and think its great.

What's the deal with labels, just buy the quality you want as a person, and try to enjoy that rather than the label alone.

As for clothes labels.....Argh! I have a Rado ceramica watch I bought in a moment of weakness that I stopped wearing because too many people knew what it cost, and asked me personal questions every time..... stupid, I now use my cellphone to tell the time.......

That Rado watch is an amazing watch, I dont wear any of my watches though as I worry about scratching them or damaging them... Which is kinda stupid.

I wear my watch everyday, If it gets scratched, then so be it. I didn't buy it to store it and know that I have a nice watch, I got it cos I wanted to use it :)

I pretend to work, they pretend to pay me...

Same on this side, luckily I don't like shopping so I end up walking into the 1st mr price or chinese store and get what I need and go home - if they don't have want I want, I reacon I don,t need it . I do not worry about labels because I will end up replacing the car's waterpump with my newly bought jeans then just use them as overalls for the rest of their life time because I paid cheap for it I don't care, just buy n new pair.

Guess its stupid to do it that way but hey thats the type of person I am - I just don't care about expensive stuff.

I have given alot of thought to the subject. Because I am of the school that I would rather debadge a car than put on false badges. But I realised the thought process must be similar to one I had when I was 6-7 years old and put playing cards in the spokes to make my bicycle sound like a motorbike... :pimp:

LOL

My E34 also had its badge removed and an M badge stuck on there, a bad quality M Badge I may add..

I removed that, and even though I bought a replacement 540 badge, im quite happy with it off :)

as for clothes and stuff... fsck it, who could be bothered in brands, buying brand name clothing just means less money for mods :)
