hey yunus

keep us updated, i have the same noise coming from my engine and i also got an E90 but 3201i sportsback

so after 6 visits back and forth to BMW
they changed the power steering pump
they changed the alternator pulley and guide
and still the same sound.

so now it could be a timing chain which is too tight because when you you drive it at hi revs it picks up the slack to help acceleration and response:blab: , but the doubt bmw sa will give authrisation to open the motor to correct this and it will probably happen again anyway.

the the made me drive a 325 coupe with the same engine and said ,"see its normal this one makes that noise too ".

so my advice to anyone looking for a 325i, buy a prefacelift not and lci , its a complete fuckup of a car , feels low on power , the exhaust is too quiet and the engine whines!:argh:

anybody want to buy it ?

It could be the ruber seals on your aircon. Had a similar problem. The first time I was told that they had to replace the pulleys due to misalignment. Had to take car back three times and had to leave it at the workshop before they found the problem
every dealership i went to say its normal and were not willing to look for the problem :nonono:, bunch of lazy ass part fitters , not one decent old school mechanic amongst them.

at least the tech rep acknowledged the fact that there was definitely a whine , and i was not imagining it:thumbs:...............what happens now waits to be seen!

if your aircon is one, switch it off and see if it make s a difference.

I have read somewhere that if the aircon gas is low it could cause a whine sound

try checking the tension pulleys... i changed both of mine and voila... sound gone and car is quiet now... because they are in the engine room they echo so you may not think its the pulleys but it just could be(as in my case) i suggest you take a pipe and listen at the pulleys to hear where the sound is coming from(they are the 2 smallest pulleys on the engine) ... the pulleys are easy as hell to change, i did mine myself and it took aobut 15 mins coz i i had to figure out how to put the belt back....

they have narrowed it down to the gearbox or flywheel on my auto tranny

there is still some oke form jhb who needs to make an assesment ....so we'll see/ hear soon i hope

if it comes back with the same noise , well i guess it will just have to go back again..... i am stubborn like that , i wont even sell this car without them fixing it to my satisfaction.

Hey Yunuso, sorry to hear about your frustrations. Seeing as you have dealt with so many people so far, maybe you won't mind another. Try giving Malcolm Saich a call on 084 433 0655. he runs a workshop in Somerset West. I have been going to him with my Bm's and wife's car for the last 4 years. He is a BMW specialist, very knowledgable and personable. Also very busy, but call him, tell him Greg with the E39 540 suggested you call him, and explain to him what you have done so far. He may just be able to help. I've had issues where I thought we'd really struggle & then he just knew right away what to do. He's also very reasonable. Up to you, mate. Good luck. Keep us posted. Also maybe Rick540 will chime in with some wisdom before long...
