Whining diff on 330d

Was getting a whining noise at the rear of my 330d. I suspected it was the diff so I took the car to Ross Duncan to confirm.

I was told that the diff cannot be fixed and needs to be replaced.
Is this true? Surely these things don't get thrown away once damaged.
Anyone know where I could find a diff or a place that repairs them in gauteng?

Diff ratio is 2.81

I would get a second opinion

Have you tried changing the fluid? Will also give you an opportunity to check for metal fillings in the old oil

Yeah BMW service department are really confused. No ways does the diff take 8lts oil. :flyfun: Thats the reason no dealership will ever touch my car :nonono:

interesting, when my diff was replaced on M/P I was told these diffs get refurbished similar to how they do gearboxes, where the housing is kept and the inside replaced. :fencelook:

just looked at my invoice when they did my diff, it costs around just shy of 30k. They did mine and used 30 units of ATF at 28.30 each, so if taken at a pint then it comes to around 7.5 litres? If I'm correct...this was on a 320d though

Indeed, most of the time if you buy something, like a diff, gearbox, starter, ps pump, alternator, etc from the dealers it will be a rebuilt/re-manufactured/refurbished part.

7.5l of ATF with a diff replacement, yup that sounds about right for the dealers..... :fencelook:

@op, have you checked the oil level of the diff, though at this point if it is too low it is probably too late in anyway.

The diff isn't big enough to take 8 liters of oil they talking nonsense.

A 4 cylinder engine takes about 5 liters of oil, how can they fit 8L's into a diff.

One forum member did mention that he was able to repair his diff. Meaning then that the diff can be opened.

I will see if i can find the thread.

The other alternative (which is what i did) is to get a second hand diff from a scrap yard like MD house.

Tunetech confirmed that the diff can be repaired. If I have issues with getting a replacement, I will go this route

Buddy save the money on the oil change and use it towards repairing the diff.

The oil change may reduce the noise but the diff will still need to be repaired.

Most E90's have their diff's replaced at least once while on MP.

Try to source another diff, take the old one and have it repaired at a later stage.

You then have a spare or you can Sell It.
