HI all,

I need some advise here. According to the question which motor will last longer in general 320i or 320d

Lets not debate too much about the maintenance cost however I need an overview petrol vs diesel

I am planning on buying a bmw 2.0 turbo petrol 3 series or 2.0 diesel turbo as a daily that I will put a lot of km in the next few years 10 years +- to be exact.

Car will have to be driven for that duration and this will be a sacrifice I need to make for future investment.

So my question is which motor is more durable / reliable on high mileage 300 000Km which will most probably be the end number after 10 years.

2nd question manual or auto for exact reasons

This will be long trips 150km a day +-

Diesels like the open roads, I presume this 150km will mostly be open roads? At those KMs you will probably be servicing the 320d every 8-10 weeks as well. When I had mine it did around 8k KMs for every oil service. It is yet to see how the F chassis ZF boxes will hold up, but the N47 motor is pretty solid. I owned a 320d for about 2.5 years. Please just go for something newer than 2012, mine had a lot of teething issues and I don't think that was a good year. My 2014 model has much less issues.. My 2c good luck :=):

I do 30,000km per year and can recommend a manual diesel. Diesels do well on long trips and have great fuel consumption.

I average 5l/100km combined.

Agree with diesel, but I'd say that the engine will last longer with a auto than a manual. Why? In general, when driven normally, the auto always changes relatively early - and with the ZF 8 speed boxes, it's less stress under normal driving conditions. With the manual box, you can easily abuse the engine a lot more under normal conditions, especially stop/start traffic.

Now, in terms of gearbox longevity, that's a different story. For that, I'm going to contradict myself and say manual.

If it were me, I'd take the diesel with an auto box and just make sure I do regular gearbox oil changes around every 60K-100k KM.

Just my R0.02.

My sentiments. 320d auto and change the oil in the gearbox every 60k Km despite what Bmw tell you.
