Thinking back to when I was 18 I would of never trusted myself with a 335i, experience does count. I would not trust my son with a similar car when he turns 18. But if you are responsible and have been driving similar high power cars I would suggest go for a bmw high performance driving course, even though a 330D has less power than a 335i its still a handful mainly because its RWD and loads of torque comes in at low RPM

I'm definitely planning on doing an advanced driving course once I've got my license, thanks for your advice!

Get a 335d
We do not get 335ds in SA.

I'm in agreement an 18 year old shouldn't be driving a 335i. Driving high powered cars for a year doesn't mean much. Typically one becomes more responsible with age. I probably would have killed myself if I had a 335i when I was 18. We tend to think we're bullet proof at that age.

I've had my fair share of high powered cars and at the age of 25 i have a tuned 330d and forged megane rs.

The 330d is a superb car! Plenty power with great economy! 335i is boss, but as everyday car and being student 330d all the way

I think the 330d is a good choice for power and economy... At 18 you need a bit of room to upgrade after you're done with your first car. A 335i sets the bar pretty high.

I think a Fiat 500 to start there tyke ;)

335i all the way bud. I wish i had those options at 18. Brat ;).

Obviously the 335i on fuel consumption cannot be compared to the 330d or 320d. But the fact you getting a car like these at your age I doubt money is an issue...

320d should suffice I think... there's huge difference between the way you drive you folk's car and your car.. you get to be more liberal with your car and excitement can be too much..

if you will have help maintaining the car (maintenance, services etc) then the 335 will be an amazing first car. every time you start that car and hear that cold start burble you will love that car every day.
It is a serious machine though, and if you not experienced with a rear wheel drive car, never mind driving in general, it does demand respect.

if you looking for a mix of performance, style and economy then in my opinion you can't get any better than a 320D lci motorsport.
Stock standard you be ahead of G5 GTI until about 4th gear, and all this while still getting 700km+ per tank. i recently bought one and am loving every second of it. yes the cold start diesel engine sound not the most attractive sound, but once you pull off and enjoy that well balanced drive and knowing you wont be at the fuel pumps for a long time is a great feeling.

leading me to my choice, the 330D is the perfect BMW out of the others listed here. 335 performance (after a map) with the consumption of a diesel... what else would one want!?

all in all looking forward to your choice, and either or you choose, enjoy man! there is no better feeling than that first drive in your own first car :coolShake:
