Hi guys

Which Castrol oil is ok to use in my 2006 325i? I asked the previous owner and he said use Castrol that has been approved for bmw, he doesn't recall the exact name But remembers it being a green bottle.
My oil level dropped and I will need to topup soon.

Thanks in advance

It would / should have been Castrol Edge Professional not plain Edge - don't use Edge it's really crap.

In fact do an oil change and use Liqui Moly ideally.

You normally get them in 1l most the the 5l are the normal edge.

There is a shell you can also use which is a newer version. I have this is my 320d and very happy with it. Not a fan of any castrol products. It's more a name than anything ells.

Second oil change with shell, much cleaner. Bmw have also moved to shell. Even if the oils caps say castrol.

Ultra extra is well used in audi and more common. The one next to it with ect is what bmw use now in there cars. I just use the ultra it's easy to get.

:roflol::roflol: He was asking about what's in his car, not about the best gaddam oil around. I would not use Castrol personally, I use Moly.

What bmw have you got? I must says I cannot fault shell. I been using it since I owned my first car. never seen oil brake down or premeture sludge from shell. I know it's not the most expensive product but it's never let me down. I run shell in my 4x4 gearbox and that motor and gearbox is well on its way to 300k km and no issues.

Hi there, you can't go wrong with Shell. I heard of many cars that ran on Castrol and used oil till they changed to Shell then the oil usage stops. I also believe that Shell cleans your engine. If you put it in an engine with sludge,it loosens the sludge and unfortunately blocks your oil pick-up. I've used Shell all my life and never had problems with it. It still is your decision. Keep well.

Oo,don't top up with a different oil then your car runs on,rather do an oil change if you want to change to a different type [WINKING FACE]

but the question is
does topping up with a different brand or quality of oil make a huge difference to the remaining oil within the sump ?

much like pee-ing in the swimming pool, you know there is urea in the pool, but it doesn't make any difference to the pool water

or does it ?

I don't think that mixing brands of 5W40 synthetic oil will make any difference.

As far as Liqui Moly goes, Autozone sells it at R650 for a 5 liter can. Small bottles as well, but I don't know the price.

BTW, Autozone also sells a no-name brand synthetic at R250 per 5 liter. It is locally made by CIM Lubri Fuel if you must know. It has the same specs as Helix Ultra - I checked. Guess what I will be using.

For these cars the standard oil used (if Castrol) is Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W-30 LL01, green bottle. It used to be called SLX some years ago.
