Hi Guys

I am planning on buying a 2011 E90 BMW 330d with about R174 000km on the clock.
I would like to hear your thoughts on which Extended warranty or motorplans are good in your experience?

Most of them are full of shit. Rather put that money into an emergency fund account.

You need to balance the fact that all of them require that your vehicle is maintained at a dealer or RMI certified workshop, versus what you can do on your own. Most of them also have limits on each component as well. Its a tricky one. You might end up using it or not. Since you have a 330d I would rather spend that money on some preventative maintenance such as the damper pulley and gearbox service. Personally, I wont take out one since these cars are generally trouble free.

Personal opinion, skip the warranty and rather buy a car:

1. that has a FSH
2. that has documented preventative maintenance done, ie damper pulley, shocks, disks, oil services every 10 000km etc
3. that was owned by a fanatic, preferably a 1 owner car.

I've had a third party warranty on two vehicles that I had kept after MP and didn't end up claiming for anything as things didn't go wrong... I agree, it's a nice to have as it gives you some peace-of-mind but IMO if you know the car you're buying then just set some money aside and plan your maintenance accordingly. There is plenty info on these cars so it shouldn't be a problem unless its a lemon or poorly maintained.

Im going to put my decision here, and the rest is up to you.

I eventually bought myself an '09 335i E92 DCT.
i did a load of research before purchasing, and knew that the Turbos have wastegate rattle issues. with a few other little nigglys, but nothing outrageous.
I followed that up with warranty research, including the Aftermarket plan through BMW.
the overall consenus was, that unless there is catastrophic damage/failure, the warranty will not pay out.
eg, the turbos were rattling, and even though BMW knew that was the weakpoint in the turbo assembly, they would not take that as an issue to warrant payout or repair, the turbo would physically have to fail before its warranted, then the max payout (at the time) would be R10 500, which is only a portion of the cost of the Turbos without labour.

The same principle applied to parts like clutches (shudder would not suffice as an issue, had to be complete failure), etc.

so my decision was to completely ignore the requirement for a warranty, and tackle the issues as and when required.

Ive owned the 335i now for over a year, and have replaced only Radiator, and done a full Turbo recon with new Wastegates. all of which i prepared myself for, and made provisions for.

there is enough help here on the Forum with the Fanatics, as well as outside sources ie: Youtube, other forums etc, to be able to bypass a warranty, and still be able to have things handled and completed the right way.
dont let Dealers bully you into taking a warranty as a "MUST HAVE". you dont have to take it.
